Wildcats’ first league win comes down to final bout

MOUNT VERNON – It came down to the last bout of the last meet, but Oak Harbor got its first Western Conference North Division dual meet wrestling victory, edging Mount Vernon 35-34 Monday.

The Wildcats (1-7 in league, 1-7 overall) started strong, recording a major decision in the 119-pound bout and a pin at 125.

The Bulldogs (2-6, 3-8) got on the scoreboard when James Williams (130) pinned Josh Stratton in 36 seconds, avenging a loss by pin at an earlier meet.

An Oak Harbor forfeit at 103 gave Mount Vernon its first lead of the night, 34-30, and made the final bout of the evening between the Wildcats’ Karlson Miller (119) and the Bulldogs’ Kyle Newman, the decisive match.

Miller defeated Newman, 20-2, recording a technical fall to give Oak Harbor five team points and its first league victory.

“(Miller) was very aggressive and knew exactly where he wanted to go,” said Mount Vernon coach Kurt Harvill.
