Wildcats trap Eagles, beat Arlington

ARLINGTON — There’s an old saying in sports that defense wins games.

Wednesday night defense won the game for the Oak Harbor Wildcats girls basketball team.

Oak Harbor used a half-court trap throughout its Wesco North game against Arlington, limiting the Eagles to 19-percent shooting from the field in a 58-23 win at Arlington High School.

“They zoned a lot and when they’re zoning and we’re not shooting well it’s not pretty,” Arlington head coach Nathan Davis said.

Arlington did not score more than nine points in any quarter and was forced into 16 turnovers.

“Oak Harbor played incredibly hard, they hustled and played with a lot of heart. That translated into a ‘W’ for them,” Davis said.

Jessica Denmon scored a game-high 14 points as Oak Harbor (2-0 in league, 4-0 overall) jumped out to a 16-5 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Mietra Smollack scored nine points and Jennifer Jansen added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

“Smollack plays great defense, passes well and she’s a good leader. Both their posts played well,” Davis said.

Sheryl Scheppele led Arlington with six points and Quinn Kesselring added five points and five rebounds for the Eagles, who dropped their first league game of the season.
