Jamar Williams will keep coaching basketball in Everett, but starting next season he will coach Wildcats, not Bruins.
Williams is Archbishop Murphy High School’s new head boys basketball coach. He accepted the job on Monday, Archbishop Murphy athletic director Rick Stubrud said.
Williams, who coached the Class 4A Cascade Bruins the last three seasons, replaced Greg Turcott, who resigned after coaching the 2A Archbishop Murphy Wildcats for two years. Turcott guided Murphy to consecutive 2A District 1 tournament appearances.
“It was a tough decision” to leave Cascade, Williams said, but he is looking forward to “a great opportunity at Archbishop Murphy. They have a great tradition there.”
Williams will work well with the student-athletes and the community at Murphy, Stubrud said: “What Jamar brings is simply a nice, professional presence and good experience at a 4A school.”
This past winter Williams guided Cascade of the Western Conference North Division to the 4A District 1 tournament, the Bruins’ first playoff appearance since 2006. Cascade finished with a record of 15-9 and was one win away from qualifying for the state tournament. The Bruins lost against Jackson, the eventual 4A state runner-up, in a winner-to-state, loser-out district game.
“It was a great end for those (Cascade) guys who started the journey with us three years ago,” Williams said, adding that he hopes the Bruins program can build on the success they achieved in the 2009-2010 season.
Next season Williams will have a chance to coach against his former team. The Wildcats are scheduled to play a non-league game at Cascade, Williams said.
