Winterhawks blank Silvertips, take 2-0 series lead

Everett falls for the second straight night in its best-of-seven series.

PORTLAND — Marcus Nguyen scored a pair of first-period goals and the Portland Winterhawks beat the Everett Silvertips 4-0 on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven first-round WHL playoffs series.

Jack O’Brien added a goal in the second period and tacked on an empty-netter in the final moments of the third for Portland. Goaltender Jan Spur stopped all 18 Everett shot attempts.

Netminder Tyler Palmer made 18 saves in 21 tries for the Silvertips, who were outshout 28-18.
