My colleague John Sleeper said this may be the wost football game he’s ever seen, and it’s hard to argue with him. This has been painful to watch. The teams have combined for 151 yards of total offense, and 75 of them came on two Stanford passes to end the first half.
The Husky defensive line is playing well, but it doesn’t really matter because the offense can’t move the ball against a really bad defense. The blocking has been terrible by the offensive line, and UW receivers are dropping passes left and right. It also seems that the Huskies are not running the right plays, as there seems to be a lot of bickering among players. On Washington’s last drive of the half – you know, the one in which it got the ball at the 23 and proceded to move back to the 38 and punt – Sonny Shackelford quickly ran into the tight end spot, completely missed a block that led to Johnny DuRocher getting hammered, and then was clearly angry on the sideline. Leads me to believe that a tight end didn’t realize he was supposed to be on the field and Shackelford realized it and tried to cover for him.
I don’t know what else to say. There’s no energy from a small crowd, and why should there be? This seems to be a team that has gone really far backwards. The Huskies may still win this game because Stanford is so bad, but how are they going to beat Washington State? Maybe it would be better for all involved to call it a season. I mean, like, right now, just don’t bother coming out at halftime, and we can all focus on basketball.
We’ll be back with what should be startlingly unimpressive stats before the start of the second half, if anyone cares.
