CINCINNATI — Kevin Youkilis did it all in his homecoming.
Youkilis singled, doubled and hit a tiebreaking homer in the 10th inning Saturday, rallying the Boston Red Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the team he adored as a local prep and college star and later resented when it passed him over in the draft.
With more than 140 relatives and friends in the stands, the first baseman connected in the 10th off Mike Lincoln (0-2) to snap a 4-all tie and save the Red Sox from one of their most stunning meltdowns on the road. Coco Crisp homered off Lincoln on the next pitch.
Jonathan Papelbon (3-2) came in to protect a 4-3 lead in the ninth, got the first two outs and went to a 2-2 count on Edwin Encarnacion. He then left a fastball over the plate, and Encarnacion hit the mistake for Cincinnati’s third solo homer to tie it.
It was only the third time Papelbon had blown a save chance in 22 opportunities. He’d been perfect since he blew one on May 9.
Tigers 12, Dodgers 7
DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera and Marcus Thames homered and Detroit scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined to beat Los Angeles.
Cabrera, Thames, Curtis Granderson and Edgar Renteria each drove in two runs for the Tigers, who won their fifth straight game and seventh in their last eight.
Andre Ethier homered and had four RBIs for the Dodgers, who have lost four straight and 16 of their last 22.
Eddie Bonine (1-0) had his contract purchased from Class AAA Toledo before the game and got the win in his major league debut. He allowed six runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Brad Penny (5-9) allowed one hit before being knocked out of the game in the fourth. He gave up seven runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings with two walks and didn’t strike out a batter.
Cubs 6, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO — Jason Marquis tossed seven-plus innings to record his third consecutive victory and Reed Johnson hit a three-run homer in Chicago’s win over Toronto.
Marquis (5-3) faced one batter over the minimum during the first four innings and didn’t allow a hit until Lyle Overbay led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right-center. He departed after seven-plus innings having allowed one run and four hits.
Johnson, who was released by Toronto on March 23, got some redemption against his former club when he hit a 1-1 fastball from Roy Halladay (8-6) over the wall in left for a three-run shot in the Cubs’ four-run second inning.
Marquis is 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA over his past six starts and helped the Cubs pick up their first victory on artificial turf since Sept. 1, 2004, at Montreal.
Cardinals 3, Phillies 2
ST. LOUIS — Kyle Lohse pitched a season-high eight innings of four-hit ball and Adam Kennedy hit a two-run home run, helping St. Louis rebound from their worst loss at 3-year-old Busch Stadium with a victory over Philadelphia in the only National League game on the schedule.
Lohse (8-2) was hurt only by Pat Burrell’s two-run homer in the fourth in an outing that took pressure off a bullpen that pitched 5 2/3 innings in a 20-2 loss on Friday night.
Stand-in closer Ryan Franklin got three outs for his ninth save in 12 chances.
Losing pitcher Adam Eaton (2-4) got two of the four hits off Lohse. Eaton allowed three runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals beat the Phillies for only the third time in 11 meetings at 3-year-old Busch Stadium. Philadelphia had been averaging 7.5 runs in its previous 22 games against St. Louis.
Yankees 8, Astros 4
HOUSTON — Mike Mussina pitched six solid innings for his 10th win and helped put the New York Yankees three games above .500 for the first time this season with a victory over the Astros.
Alex Rodriguez hit a fan-aided solo homer and Melky Cabrera, Jose Molina and Wilson Betemit each added a pair of RBIs for the Yankees, who’ve won eight of 11.
Mussina (10-4) allowed three runs and six hits to reach 10 wins for the 17th straight season, extending his American League record. Mussina 260th victory got off to a rocky start, allowing a double and a single in the first inning before Carlos Lee’s three-run homer.
Wandy Rodriguez (2-3) allowed six hits and five runs in five innings.
Padres 8, Indians 3 (10)
CLEVELAND — Kevin Kouzmanoff’s grand slam highlighted San Diego’s five-run 10th inning, and the Padres beat Cleveland.
San Diego pitchers Cha Seung Baek, Heath Bell (4-3) and Bryan Corey held the Indians to four hits. Baek and Bell combined to retire 23 of 24 hitters, including 19 straight.
Edgar Gonzalez singled with one out in the 10th off Edward Mujica (0-1) and went to third on Brian Giles’ double. After Adrian Gonzalez was intentionally walked, Tony Clark walked on a 3-2 pitch.
Kouzmanoff, acquired from the Indians following the 2006 season, hit a 1-1 pitch into the left field bleachers for his 10th home run of the season and third career grand slam.
Jody Gerut had three hits for San Diego. He singled in a run in the fifth and tied the game with a leadoff homer off Rafael Perez in the eighth. Justin Huber added a solo shot in the third.
Twins 9, Brewers 4 (12)
MILWAUKEE — Brian Buscher singled with the bases loaded and pinch-hitter Michael Cuddyer hit a two-run triple and scored on an error in the 12th inning to lead Minnesota over Milwaukee.
Prince Fielder thought he’d ended the game with two outs in the 10th inning with a drive off the center-field wall that highlighted the discussion for instant replay.
Fielder’s shot appeared to hit the yellow line, but not go over the wall after Carlos Gomez attempted a leaping catch. He settled for a triple and Mike Cameron grounded out weakly to end the inning.
In the 12th, Buscher, recalled from Class AAA Rochester on Friday, drove in two runs to break a 4-all tie with his single off reliever Julian Tavarez (0-1), who had loaded the bases with no outs by allowing a single to Joe Mauer and two walks.
Brian Bass (3-2) got the win after pitching the 11th.
Rays 4, Marlins 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Matt Garza pitched seven strong innings and Jonny Gomes homered in his first at-bat since serving a five-game suspension for his part in a bench-clearing brawl, leading Tampa Bay past Florida.
Garza (5-3) allowed one run and three hits, walked one and struck out three to rebound from a loss at Texas in which he had a heated exchange with batterymate Dioner Navarro that began on the mound and continued in the dugout after the right-hander gave up a home run.
Jason Bartlett’s two-run single off Mark Hendrickson (7-5) snapped a 1-all tie in the fourth inning. Dan Wheeler worked a scoreless eighth, and Troy Percival added a perfect ninth to finish the three-hitter for his 15th save in 17 opportunities.
Tampa Bay has won 22 of its last 25 at home, including eight consecutive series.
Rockies 2, White Sox 0
CHICAGO — Willy Taveras stole a career-high five bases, spot starter Jorge De La Rosa pitched the best game of his career and Colorado snapped Chicago’s nine-game home winning streak.
The Rockies won despite going 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Taveras failed to score a run despite his five swipes. He has 29 in 31 attempts this season, most in the National League and just five shy of his career high.
De La Rosa struck out a career-high eight and allowed one hit and one walk in five innings. Reliever Jason Grilli (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings to earn the victory and closer Brian Fuentes pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save in 13 opportunities.
Jeff Baker greeted White Sox reliever Octavio Dotel (3-4) with a double to lead off the seventh inning and scored when Paul Konerko couldn’t stop a hard grounder to first.
Orioles 8, Pirates 7
BALTIMORE — Oscar Salazar homered in the ninth inning and Ramon Hernandez added a two-out RBI single to end a back-and-forth duel and give the Orioles a win over Pittsburgh.
Baltimore overcame four homers by the Pirates and rallied from deficits of 2-1, 5-4 and 7-6.
Nick Markakis homered and Brian Roberts and Adam Jones each had three hits for the Orioles, who improved to 15-9 in one-run games after going 13-31 in that situation last season.
After Adam LaRoche hit a two-run homer in the ninth off George Sherrill (2-1) to give Pittsburgh a 7-6 lead, Baltimore came back against Matt Capps (0-2). Salazar, who replaced an injured Melvin Mora in the first inning, tied it with his first home run since 2002.
Freddie Bynum then drew a one-out walk, stole second after a fly ball by Jay Payton and scored when Hernandez hit a liner to the gap in left-center.
Royals 12, Diamondbacks 3
PHOENIX — Rookie Mike Aviles had four hits and Kansas City hammered Randy Johnson and Arizona.
Playing in his 10th career game, Aviles doubled twice and singled against Johnson, then homered off reliever Billy Buckner.
The Big Unit (4-4) gave up eight runs, seven of them earned, and 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings. Johnson has 288 career victories but is winless in his last five starts.
Kansas City had 12 runs on 17 hits, both season highs. The Royals’ eruption provided plenty of support for Luke Hochevar (4-5), who won for the first time since May 14, a span of six starts.
Hochevar, the first overall pick in the 2006 draft, allowed three runs, two earned, and 10 hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked none.
Athletics 4, Giants 0
SAN FRANCISCO — Rich Harden pitched one-hit ball for six innings and matched his season high with nine strikeouts, and Kurt Suzuki hit his first career triple in Oakland’s win
Harden (4-0) walked two while facing only two batters over the minimum. It was the third straight start and fifth time overall this season in which the Oakland right-hander has had at least eight strikeouts.
Brad Ziegler, Alan Embree, Keith Foulke and Huston Street completed the six-hitter for the A’s, Oakland’s third shutout of the year.
San Francisco starter Matt Cain (3-5), who had a season-high 11 strikeouts, gave up two runs and six hits in seven-plus innings. The righty is winless in his last six interleague starts.
Braves 9, Angels 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Charlie Morton won in his major league debut, Brandon Jones hit his first career homer and Mark Teixeira had three RBIs, leading Atlanta over the Angels.
Morton, whose contract was purchased from the Braves’ Triple-A Richmond club earlier in the day, allowed three runs and five hits in six innings with four strikeouts and a walk.
Kelly Johnson also homered for the Braves, who won 5-2 Friday night and have recorded consecutive victories on a road trip for the first time since April 11-12 at Washington.
Ervin Santana (8-3) gave up six runs, nine hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings and struck out six.
