Young Meadowdale swimmers capture Edmonds District championship

LYNNWOOD – Derek Shiu led the youthful Meadowdale Mavericks to their sixth Edmonds District Championship Swim Meet Saturday with 363 points -59 points better than their nearest competitor.

Shiu, a sophomore, guided the Mavericks with wins in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.53) and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.16. He also swam legs on Meadowdale’s relay team, which won the 200-yard medley (1:51.49) and 400-yard freestyle (1:08.16).

“This was an in-house meet that didn’t mean anything,” Meadowdale coach Wally Nagel said. “It’s about bragging rights. And it was big for us, especially because we are so young. It marks for a good future.”

Freshman John Keane won the 100-yard backstroke (59.59) and teammate Nick Boyce captured the 100-yard freestyle (54.30) for the senoir-free Meadowdale team. The duo also participated in both relay victories.

Nick Tainter recorded state qualifying times in the 200 freestyle 1:50.64 and 500-yard freestyle (4:58.37) while helping Edmonds-Woodway finish second with 304 points.

Other winners included E-W’s Tony Dennis in the 100-yard butterfly, Lynnwood’s Bela Stoll in the 50-yard freestyle and the Mountlake Terrace relay team in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Lynden Christian 41, South Whidbey 32: Hilary Wick scored a team-high 14 points in a North Cascades Conference loss for South Whidbey.

Wesco North qualifications: Snohomish’s Forest Elander qualified for the state diving competion after finishing in third place with 314.55 points. Jeff Akins (339.60), of Snohomish and Marysville-Pilchuck’s Jacob Diggs (3526.65), both of who qualifed for the state meet earlier in the season, finished first and second. respectively.
