From the Western Conference to the Ivy League, Hayley Zevenbergen will continue to use her head.
A three-year starting senior center midfielder for Edmonds-Woodway High School, Zevenbergen has made a verbal commitment to play soccer for Yale. She also considered Harvard and University of the Pacific, among others.
Zevenbergen attends King’s, a private school in Shoreline that doesn’t have a girls soccer program. Despite attending a different school, Zevenbergen, E-W’s captain, made quite an impact on her teammates. They voted her Most Valuable Player this year.
“The respect level that her teammates have for her is second to none,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Bill Le Compte said. “Over the last three years they’ve really grown to count on what she brings to the game.”
Zevenbergen strives to make everyone better. “She’s never once looked down on a teammate. She’s really shined (because) she’ll incorporate everybody.”
Zevenbergen, who scored five goals for E-W this season, is one of the biggest reasons the Warriors were able to win the Wesco South and advance to the Class 4A state tournament last year, Le Compte said. “I don’t think her stats show what she meant to our team.”
Nearly six feet tall, Zevenbergen is a threat in the air but she’s also able to beat opponents with her quick feet. Most of her goals came on dead-ball headers following corner kicks and throw-ins. Her fearlessness in the air is a big part of her game, Le Compte said.
“She doesn’t back down from challenges. Her teammates respect her for it.”
Duty commits to San Francisco: Meadowdale’s Jessica Duty has made a verbal commitment to play soccer for the University of San Francisco. Duty, a senior midfielder and team co-captain, was an All-Wesco first-team selection. She also considered Princeton, Nevada and University of the Pacific.
“I love the team, the players, and the coach,” she said. “It was a good fit.”
Duty, Meadowdale’s assist leader this year, knows how to make things happen, Meadowdale coach Sean Griffin said. “She has the ability to be a real impact player. She has good speed, she’s aggressive, she loves to take people on (and) she has incredible quick-foot skills.”
Hawks soar at Jam Session: The Mountlake Terrace boys basketball team put its aerial prowess on display last Tuesday night during its annual Jam Session hoops kickoff at the Mountlake Terrace High gym.
After the girls scrimmage, Andrew Mundt, Mike Boxley and Leigh Swanson competed in a slam dunk contest. Boxley, an energetic 6-5 senior forward, generated the first sweet jam of the night when he sprinted down the lane and flushed a one-hand, spread-eagle attempt. He also converted a difficult 360-degree dunk.
But teammate Leigh Swanson, a smooth 6-foot-7 post, had the dunk of the night. His two-hand reverse off a bounce along the baseline ignited the sizable crowd. Swanson, headed to Seattle University, also connected on a one-hand long-jump dunk from just a few feet inside the free-throw line and went on to top Boxley for the dunk title. Afterwards, when asked what he thought of the high-flying display, Terrace coach Nalin Sood joked that he taught his players all of their mid-air moves.
Later, Swanson’s Black team toppled Boxley’s Red squad 66-52 in the boys scrimmage.
Skyline, Evergreen will clash for 4A football title: It probably won’t make Kamiak and Edmonds-Woodway feel better, but the teams that eliminated them from the Class 4A state football playoffs advanced to the championship game.
Skyline (12-1 overall), which edged Kamiak 28-21 Nov. 20 in a quarterfinal, will battle Evergreen (13-0), which topped E-W 42-7 Nov. 13 in the first-round. The teams play 4 p.m. Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. Fox Sports Net will televise the game.
During the semifinals last weekend Skyline, of Sammamish, upset top-ranked Pasco, the defending state champion, 28-23 at Tacoma Dome. Evergreen (Vancouver) escaped with a 31-30 victory over Gonzaga Prep in Spokane.
Also, East Valley of Yakima plays Othello (9-4) for the 2A title at 7:30 p.m. Top-ranked East Valley (13-0) defeated Archbishop Murphy 41-35 in double overtime last weekend. The Red Devils beat Othello 21-14 Sept. 17.
