A Mill Creek man faces a charge of obstructing a law enforcement officer after giving a false name to police that resulted in him being wrongly arrested in the first place.

The episode began when Mill Creek police responded to a reported fight at The Laurel Apartments on 164th Street SE shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 28. The call resulted in a man at the apartment being arrested on a misdemeanor warrant out of Kirkland for disorderly conduct. Police then transported the suspect to the King-Snohomish County line to be turned over to Kirkland authorities.

Two hours later, however, the man was returned to Mill Creek custody when it was discovered he lied about his identity, and gave the name of a person with an arrest warrant.

The lie was discovered when Kirkland police searched the suspect’s clothing and found a military ID with his given name. Upon questioning, the man confessed he had used the name of an acquaintance.

After being returned to Mill Creek custody the man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of obstructing a law enforcement officer, which is a misdemeanor.

According to Mill Creek police spokesperson Becky Erk, the suspect has no prior arrest record, but she said he could’ve used false names in the past to cover up prior arrests.

Erk also said that incidents like this one happen an average of two or three times a year.

Police made no other arrests resulting from the disturbance call at The Laurel Apartments.
