Shoreline residents who live in the Ronald Wastewater District (RWD) Annexation Area became eligible to vote in district elections, have a say in district decisions, and run for the office of commissioner after the primary election on Aug. 19. Although the residents have been receiving services from the utility since the area was acquired from Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), they were not eligible to participate in district matters until the area was annexed.
Approximately 19,000 residents, 10 schools and over 300 businesses are located within the area.
Voters approved the Ronald Wastewater Annexation on primary election ballot by a margin of over 80 percent.
“We are delighted with the outcome of the election and thank everyone for their support,” Arthur Wadekamper, president of the board of commissioners, said in a press release. “Since acquiring the area from SPU in 2001, we have worked toward incorporating the area to give all ratepayers a say in District matters.”
Annexation will not change service to customers in any way, nor will it affect rates to customers within either the existing boundary, or the new corporate boundary. The measure simply gives all ratepayers the same representation and right to vote in district matters. Ronald Wastewater District is a special purpose district founded in 1951 and governed by three elected commissioners.
