TACOMA

It wasn’t exactly what he had hoped for, but Archbishop Murphy senior Nick Snyder still came home with three medals from the Class 2A state track and field championships May 25-26 at Mount Tahoma High School.

He defended his 110-meter hurdles title but the win wasn’t completely satisfying because the leader, Christian Stark, who had the best preliminary time, fell on the last hurdle.

Snyder’s time of 15.07 was enough to earn him first.

“It’s kind of a bittersweet victory because it doesn’t feel as sweet as beating somebody straight up, but a win is a win,” Snyder said.

The two matched up again in the 300 hurdles but his time Stark kept his feet and beat Snyder who finished second. Stark won in 38.49 while Snyder crossed the line in 38.83. The two were even coming around the last turn but Stark turned it on the last 100 meters.

“I’ve just been a little off this meet, but you know we were neck and neck coming around there I just didn’t hit those last two hurdles very well, kind of stretched for them … It felt kinda weird so he gained some time on me there,” Snyder said. “I’m not disappointed

Snyder said he expected Stark to come after him at state.

“Having beat him last year in both hurdle races I knew he was working to me, especially being a state champion last year I kind of have a target on my back,” Snyder said.

Snyder said the race he focused on the most this season was the 300 hurdles.

“There’s so many great competitors, so many guys with great times, I was really excited and looking forward to doing that,” he said.

Snyder has been accepted to the University of Washington and hopes to walk on to the track team and do hurdles next year.

Snyder also finished fifth and picked up a medal in the 200 meters with a time of 23.00. He finished ninth in the 100 preliminaries and missed the finals in that event.

On the girls side, sophomore Sarah Schireman came in with the best long jump by well over a foot at 18 feet, 6.75 inches.

However, during the Saturday morning competition she fell well short of that, jumping 15-5 which put her seventh.

“I’m just not a good morning jumper,” Schireman said.

Schireman took out her frustration in the 300 hurdles, finishing fifth in 47.54.

“I was really mad coming out of long jump, I was really frustrated with my jumping so I came into this really wanting to prove myself and get better,” Schireman said after coming down from the podium. “This is really good for me because last year I was a hundredth of a second off from qualifying in the 300 at district so it’s good to get back up here.”

Schireman finished 12th in the 100 hurdles preliminaries with a time of 16.51.

Wildcat freshman Lindsey Bos earned a fourth-place medal in the 400 meters with a time of 59.9. Only one of the runners in the final was a senior.

Bos also competed in the 200 and finished 16th in the preliminaries with a time of 27.78.

Junior Lauren Moran made it to state, competing in the triple jump. She finished 10th with a top leap of 32-9.25.

The Archbishop Murphy boys finished 10th with 22 points, all scored by Snyder, while the girls finished 20th with 11 points.
