Mill Creek gardeners dusting off their spades

The Mill Creek Garden Club will reconvene from the summer break at 11 a.m. on September 11th at the Mill Creek Country Club. Guest speaker chef Thom Clay will demonstrate how to enhance meals and offer various cooking tips. Clay and his assistant will prepare samples of several recipes for tasting.

Membership is open to all interested gardeners, serious as well as social gardeners. Annual dues are $25. Lunch costs $18 for members and $20 for guests. For reservations or more information, call Marla Nulph at 425-918-1669.

Senior center

seeks fundraisers

The Mill Creek Senior Center Foundation is looking for volunteers with experience in fundraising. The foundation was established to support construction of a senior center. Residents of the Mill Creek Community Association voted in June to allow the foundation to build a facility near the country club.

The foundation now is seeking assistance with fundraising efforts. For more information or to volunteer, call John Hudgins at 425-742-9125.

Firefighters

reward safe riders

Firefighters in three Snohomish County fire districts will be rewarding safe bicycle riders who are properly wearing helmets.

Snohomish County Fire Districts 1, 3 and 7 are partnering with Safe Kids and Subway in this program to encourage safe riding and helmet use. Firefighters will issue a Safe Rider Citation to each child they spot riding safely and wearing a helmet. The citation card can be redeemed for one free cookie at participating Subway stores.

Firefighters will always be in marked fire department vehicles and uniforms when handing out the Safe Rider Citations.

Low-cost bicycle helmets are available through Fire District 1, 3 and 7. The helmet program is part of the districts’ injury prevention effort. Firefighters are trained to custom-fit helmets. Properly fitted helmets are highly effective in preventing head injuries. Firefighters offer these safety tips:

• Children and adults need to wear a helmet every time they ride a bike, skate, scooter or skateboard.

• Choose a safe area to ride or skate.

• Obey all traffic signs and signals while riding.
