‘Tis the season for organized bicycle rides

Cascade Bicycle Club’s only urban ride targeted to kids and families is scheduled for this Sunday, Sept. 16. New for 2007, Cascade Bicycle Club has partnered with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of King County to allow riders to raise funds to support the organization while enjoying the outdoors with a group of all ages and experience.

Participants of the Cascade Spawning Cycle event can choose from bike routes ranging in distance from four to 55 miles around Seattle. The ride is based on the salmon spawning cycle – starting at the salt water at Myrtle Edwards Park, heading “upstream” to the freshwater of Lake Washington, and back to the downtown waterfront by way of the Ballard Locks. The finish line festival will include a youth zone bike course, and food including BBQ salmon burgers, Caesar salads and an espresso bar.

Cascade Bicycle Club will host two additional rides during the fall, including a new High Pass Challenge event on Sept. 23 and the 14th Kitsap Color Classic on Oct. 7.

Registration for Cascade Bicycle Club’s fall events can be done online at www.cascade.org. More information about Cascade Bicycle Club’s programs is available online at www.cascade.org or by calling 206-522-3222.

Dayton Avenue North road closure extended

The closure that was expected to end Aug. 31 between North 172nd Street and St. Luke Place North along Dayton Avenue North has been extended into September. Unexpected soil conditions have delayed construction of a retaining wall that necessitated the closure. The City of Shoreline expects to open at least one lane of Dayton for through traffic the week of Sept. 17.

The detour route is along Fremont Avenue North via North 172nd Street and Richmond Beach Road.

Drivers are encouraged to use Aurora during construction. Local access will be provided to residences but no through-traffic will be available. Pedestrian access will be provided through the site at all times during the closure. Some bus stops have been temporarily moved.
