Shoreline celebrates Interurban Trail

The clanging of the Interurban trolley bell is now just a memory, but the historic corridor that brought people and communities together almost a century ago is bringing them together again. The trolley bell is being replaced with bike bells as the city of Shoreline celebrates the completion of the Interurban Trail.

A special festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, on the Interurban Trail and in the north Walgreens parking lot on Aurora north of 175th.

A children’s bike parade will follow a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. The event will feature a bike and walking safety fair and live music. Event parking is available at the City Hall Annex, 1110 N. 175th St. For more information, contact communications specialist Susan Will at 206-546-8323.

Library parking expansion opening

To celebrate the opening of the expanded parking lot at the Shoreline Library, a community celebration will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Shoreline Library, 345 NE 175th Street. Following a dedication ceremony, there will be free food and family activities, including a Wild West magic show with Payne Fifield. The event is supported by the Friends of the Library.

The expanded parking lot was funded by the $172 million capital bond that was approved by voters in 2004 to fund major upkeep and expansion of KCLS libraries. The project expands surface parking to the west of the existing library after three residential properties were acquired in 2005 with the intent of increasing the number of available parking stalls for patrons.

The library remained open to the public throughout construction of the new 14,000 square foot parking lot, which began in July 2007. With 36 new parking spaces, there are now a total of 118 parking stalls in both the new and existing parking lots.

Other site improvements include enhancements for pedestrian circulation, reconfiguration of the existing parking lot to accommodate SUV vehicles and also the incorporation of a small outdoor gathering area for use by small groups or library patrons. The perimeter of the parking lot also is landscaped with native plants and a second stairway connects the upper parking lot with the lower parking lot.

Fire department offers CERT training

The Shoreline Fire Department is offering a three week Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training beginning Oct. 2 and concluding on Oct. 18. CERT is a way for neighborhoods, businesses, schools and other organizations to be prepared for a major disaster — and to find ways to cope during the first few days when first responders will be overwhelmed and unable to meet the demand for services.

The training will be held at the Fire Department Headquarters, 17525 Aurora Ave. N, and is offered to citizens who live or work in Shoreline. It is taught by Shoreline firefighters. Class content includes information and hands-on experience in basic fire suppression, triage and disaster first aid, light search and rescue, psychological effects of disasters, and personal, family and neighborhood preparedness.

If you would like to register, or have further questions about Shoreline CERT classes, please call Shoreline Fire’s Community Education Division at 206-533-6564 or e-mail melanie@shorelinefire.com.
