‘Scaling-down’ sale frees seniors’ excess baggage
Tag sales such as the one Irene Pappas and friends will conduct from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3-4, in the Soundview Apartments at 417 Third Ave. S. normally don’t merit a mention in the news columns of The Enterprise.
But the “Golden-Agers’ Scaling Down Sale and Bazaar” is a garage sale with a twist.
The 82-year-old Pappas said organizers of the modest sale hope to inspire more senior citizens to cull their belongings for their own peace of mind and that of their families. “We don’t have to die and leave a mess for our kids. That’s sort of punishing them,” said Pappas, who said she considers her “golden years the most exciting time,” but physically feels herself “slowly shutting down.”
Pappas and several other residents of the complex have gathered housewares, artwork, Christmas decorations and small furniture for the weekend sale. They’ll throw in a few baked goods, too. “We’re releasing things,” she said, “that normally would go in our estates.”
Seniors, Pappas said, often can’t bear to give charities — and strangers — objects of sentimental value. But neither they nor their families may have room to keep the memorabilia.
So Pappas hit upon the idea of helping other older folks identify what items they no longer need and would be willing to sell for money that can be used for expenses such as medical bills and medications.
Buyers likely will be friends and relatives of apartment residents or those from the community, Pappas said, which will make it easier for Soundview’s “golden agers” to let go of things that are part of the tapestries of their lives.
