Free shredding event Aug. 25 at TOP Food &Drug
The city of Edmonds and The Enterprise newspapers will offer a free document-shredding event from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 25 at TOP Food &Drug in Edmonds.
The store is located at 21900 Hwy. 99.
Edmonds residents are invited to bring up to five boxes 12 inches wide by 15 inches deep and 10 inches high containing paper documents to be destroyed in a truck-mounted shredder. DataSite NW is donating the service.
Documents should be free of paper clips and other metal; staples do not have to be removed. Plastic items such as credit cards, notebooks and floppy disks cannot be accepted. Documents are limited to household ones. Certificates of destruction will be available.

Judges favor ‘07 Auto Wagon in July 4 parade
The Best Centennial Entry award in Edmonds’ 100th annual Fourth of July parade went to Jack Nielsen and his 1907 International Harvester Auto Wagon.
Nielsen’s vintage vehicle was one of the many entries that drew enthusiastic applause from the thousands lining downtown streets Wednesday, July 4, for the Independence Day celebration. This year marked the 100th year the event was staged by the Greater Edmonds Chamber of Commerce.
Other winning entries in the main parade were the South County Senior Center and Sound Singers of Edmonds, Most Patriotic and Mayor’s Trophy; Lynnwood Elks’ Salute to Our Veterans, Spirit of ‘76 Award; Unique Unicycles Club, Best Drill or Marching Group; Pirates of Treasure Island, Best Decorated; Mary’s Towing, Chamber Trophy; Doc Maynard Chapter 54-40: E Clampus Vitus Precision Drill Team ,Funniest; and Master Cyrus Raeisi of Edmonds Tae Kwondo Academy, Most Original.
Treatment plant earns compliance award
The Edmonds treatment plant has received an “Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Plant” award for 2006 from the state Department of Ecology. The agency recognized 55 wastewater treatment plants out of approximately 300 in the state for being in 100 percent compliance with their discharge permits.
Edmonds has won the award five times out of the last nine years.
Representatives of DOL made the award presentation to Steve Koho, plant manager, at the June 26 Edmonds City Council meeting.
Fire Foundation still needs garage-sale items
Items will be accepted through Friday, July 20, for The Edmonds Fire Safety Foundation’s seventh annual garage sale Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28. The annual fundraiser for the Edmonds Fire Department will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at 520 Forsyth Lane in Edmonds.
Needed are gently used or new housewares, books, tools, sporting goods and artwork. Clothing, computers and monitors cannot be accepted. Contact Greg Jorgenson at 425-772-8115 to arrange pick-up or drop-off of items.
Proceeds from the sale will go toward the purchase of a medical device that detects carbon monoxide’s toxic effects in humans.
Foundation members also will be selling $1 raffle tickets for prizes such as a fire-engine pedal car. Copies of “Edmonds Fire Department — Celebrating 100 Years” will be sold for $5.
