Mill Creek senior program seeks donations for new computers

The Greater Mill Creek Senior program is seeking donations to buy new computers to be able to teach classes in Windows-Vista, the operating system that is preloaded on most computers sold since early 2007. The estimated cost is $7,500 to replace the 10 computers the program has in its computer lab. The Mill Creek Rotary has donated $500, Cob’s Bread Company has donated $1500 and individuals have donated $500.

The senior program offers computer classes for beginners in areas such as Windows, Internet &e-mail, digital photography, eBay, spreadsheets, Word and more. Since January 2006, over 500 people have taken classes, all of which are taught by volunteers

Girl Scouts council looking for nominees

Girl Scouts—Totem Council, the regional Girl Scouts organization, is accepting nominations for its annual award.

The Girl Scouts 2007 Woman of Distinction Award recognizes a woman in the community who contributes as a leader, thinker and responsible citizen.

Nominees will be selected based on her contributions to her field of expertise and the degree to which she is recognized and valued by her peers and community. She should also exemplify the values of the Girl Scouts in her personal and professional life.

To qualify, a nominee must be former Girl Scouts or current adult members of Girl Scouts of the USA., and reside within Clallam, Island, Jefferson, King, North Mason, Kitsap, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties.

The award recipient will be announced at the Girl Scouts—Totem Council’s Leadership Luncheon on Nov. 1 at the Washington State Convention Center.

Mill Creek native wins award to study abroad

Arizona State University student, Malaya Fletcher from Mill Creek, Wash., has won a National Security Education Program award to study overseas.

The NSEP awards provide up to $20,000 for a year’s study in countries that are outside Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

They provide a base of future leaders for the United States who understand less familiar languages and cultures.

Fletcher, 22, is a microbiology major and Barrett Honors College student. She will study public health, Filipino culture and the Tagalog language at the University of the Philippines.
