Applications now accepted for Parks and Rec. board

The city of Shoreline is now accepting applications for volunteers to serve on the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Board.

The 11-member board advises the Shoreline City Council and city staff on a variety of parks and recreation issues including plans and policies, park operation and design, program activities, property acquisition and development of rules and regulations.

Members of the PRCS Board are appointed by the city council for four-year terms with two youth members (ages 15-19 at the beginning of their term) serving two-year terms.

Five four-year term positions need to be filled this year. The first new youth position is open for application this year, with the second youth position available in 2009. Those interested in being considered must fill out a Shoreline Community Services Application available in the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 17544 Midvale Ave. N. or on the Web site, www.cityofshoreline.com. Completed applications must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 23.

Shoreline Solar Project March meeting focuses on Peak Oil

What is Peak Oil and what role can it play in the U.S. achieving energy independence? Come learn more at this month’s Shoreline Solar Project meeting from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 22 at Meridian Park School’s library, 17077 Meridian Ave. N, Shoreline. The event is free with a suggested $5 donation.

32nd District Town Hall meeting set for Saturday, March 17

Citizens who reside in the 32nd Legislative District are invited to attend a 32nd District Town Hall meeting from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday morning, March 17, at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, 17171 Bothell Way NE.

State Reps. Ruth Kagi and Maralyn Chase are hosting the meeting to provide an update on the 2007 legislative session and to give local citizens an opportunity to speak their minds about key issues before the Legislature.

Town Forum for King County Budget Priorities

A forum for King County residents to indicate their budget priorities has been set for 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28 at Olympic View Elementary School, 504 NE 95th St. in North Seattle. A public reception will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The forum will use electronic “interactive polling.” Participants will be given a hand-held device to use to enter opinions on a variety of issues and spending priorities. Input is recorded and reported to the group and the council in real-time.

Superintendent Sue Walker speaks to Shoreline Chamber

Sue Walker, Superintendent of the Shoreline School District, will be the featured speaker at the March 14 monthly membership luncheon of the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce discussing the “State of the District.”

Have an interest in the city’s new civic center?

Learn more and share ideas about the city’s new civic center at a meeting from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20 at Meridian Park Elementary School cafeteria, 17077 Meridian Ave. N.

Last year, the council approved the purchase of property located at North 175th Street and Midvale Avenue North, which includes the site of the existing City Hall Annex. In January of this year, the City Council approved a process to move forward with project design, management and construction in 2008. 

Early phases will include public input and detailed site and building design work later this year. By spring, the Council will identify key principles or “strategic points” for the surrounding “Civic/Town Center” to help guide detailed city hall site and building planning. 

Welcome Shoreline Police Captain Kent Baxter

Captain Kent Baxter has been assigned to the Shoreline Police Department to replace Captain Dan Pingrey, whose last day is Feb. 16. Pingrey has been reassigned to the Technical Services Division in the Sheriff’s Office. He will be in charge of the Records Unit, the Data Unit and the Contracting Unit.

Baxter has been with the Sheriff’s Office for more than 20 years. He most recently served for three years as the Chief of Police in Woodinville.
