MLT Town Center expanded at 236th

A planned Town Center in Mountlake Terrace has been expanded to include an 11-acre area along 236th Street SW connecting to the new Mountlake Terrace Transit Center.

The expansion was one of several comprehensive plan and zoning map amendments adopted by the City Council on Dec. 1.

Another amendment allows the block on which Roger’s Market Place is located, between 232nd and 231st Streets Southwest and 56th and 57th Avenues West, to redevelop to six stories, rather than the previous four-story limit.

For the greater height, special stormwater and energy conservation features must be provided.

Other comprehensive plan actions included designating several properties for multi-family use, including a small neighborhood of cul-de-sac homes off 56th Avenue West, where the homeowners had asked for the change.

For more information on the comprehensive plan and zoning map amendments call 425-744-6270.

Fire ‘safety blitz’ ends Friday, Dec. 12

Fire departments across Snohomish County are asking citizens to set aside time this week to practice home fire escape plans as part of a safety blitz that will culminate on Dec. 12 with fire drill Friday events at neighborhood fire stations.

The deaths of two young boys in a house fire on Nov. 21 prompted fire officials to launch the countywide campaign.

“We were all deeply touched by this loss and want to work to prevent future tragedies,” said Battalion Chief Christian Davis of North County Fire and EMS, the department that serves the rural Arlington area where the fatal fire occurred.

It has been a deadly year for fires in the Puget Sound region. In Snohomish County alone, there have been eight fire fatalities this year.

Throughout the week, materials will be available at schools, in fire stations and on the internet at www.snosafekids.org to assist families with developing their home fire escape plans. “We’re asking families to practice their escape plans, then visit a fire station open house on Fire Drill Friday to share their plan with firefighters and learn more about fire safety,” said Shawneri Guzman, president of Safe Kids Snohomish County, a coalition of county agencies dedicated to childhood injury prevention.

Fire foundation helps food banks

County-wide food bank programs will benefit from a $5,000 donation from the Fire 1 Foundation, a nonprofit community service organization founded by the employees of Snohomish County Fire District 1.

“Supporting food bank programs is a tradition for Fire District 1 that started almost 20 years ago when a group of firefighters passed the hat to collect money to sponsor a family for the holidays. It grew from there,” said Jim Grieco, president of the Fire 1 Foundation and a captain at the District 1’s Mariner Fire Station.

Over the years, Fire District 1 firefighters have raised more than $50,000 for the Volunteers of America food bank programs.

Kids invited to

fire station party

Firefighters at Fire District 1’s Lake Serene Fire Station are inviting neighborhood children to join them for their 15th annual holiday party on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The party begins at 10 a.m. at the fire station, 4323 Serene Lake Road, Lynnwood. Santa Claus will be making a special appearance with a little help from the firefighters.

To attend, RSVP to 425-551-1243 and bring a wrapped present ($10 value or less) labeled with your child’s first and last name to the station prior to the party. Santa will distribute the gift to your child at the party.

The Lake Serene Fire Station is one of eight stations staffed by Snohomish County Fire District 1, the largest provider of fire and emergency medical services in south Snohomish County
