A winning song of faith and devotion

By day, Matt Tipton is lead worshiper for The Journey, a new church that meets at Gateway Middle School east of Mill Creek. But leading his followers isn’t the only way Tipton expresses his faith.

He also sings, plays guitar and keyboards, and writes and composes songs. One of his works recently got him a prestigious national award.

Tipton’s song “The Greatest of Names” recently won first prize in the gospel division of the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, beating out nearly 2,000 entries.

Tipton’s song is now eligible for the Maxell Song of the Year award, which includes a $20,000 grand prize. To hear Matt’s Tipton’s song and those of the other 11 contestants, visit www.jlsc.com/winners/2006a/winners.php.

Tipton’s songs, which are primarily in the contemporary Christian genre, are also available as free downloads at The Journey’s Web site, www.jointhejourney.com. The church meets at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday at Gateway Middle School, 15404 Silver Firs Drive.
