Where to find a ghoulish good time in South County

BOO!

OK, that’s not very scary. But in October, you may know of some scary things coming up soon — like haunted houses, ghost stories and freaky parties.

Share your scary news with us. Are you or your neighbors decorating the scariest Halloween house ever? Are you hosting a Halloween-themed party open to the public? Or do you know of a local ghost who haunts the area?

Send us the details by e-mail to lynnwood@heraldnet.com or by mail at Enterprise Newspapers, 4303 198th St. SW, Lynnwood, WA 98036. Please include a daytime phone number where we can reach you.

That’s a lot of pizza

The Brier community raised $6,300 for the Eddie Thomas Memorial fund on Sept. 18 at Brier Pizza by eating a lot of pizza and other entrees.

The owners, employees and several volunteers donated their time and food so that all proceeds benefited the fund, which is helping Thomas’ family with their expenses.

King of the rock

Children will be delighted to know that a climbing rock has been installed at Jack Long Park, 22102 58th Ave. W., in Mountlake Terrace. That’s the 3-acre park next to the giant, green water towers drivers can see from I-5.

The six-foot-tall, six-foot-long manufactured rock is ideal for children ages 5 to 12. Price tag: $10,000.

The climbing rock is one of several improvements to Jack Long Park, including the addition of an oval -shaped asphalt walkway, benches and a picnic table, which will be in place by the end of the year.

Korean harvest

Some residents will mark the fall harvest season by celebrating the Chusok Festival.

A local celebration is set for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Morningstar Korean Cultural Center, 15206 18th Ave. W., near Lynnwood.

Sometimes called the “Korean Thanksgiving,” Chusok is a harvest festival devoted to honoring family and feasting.

A traditional, festive Korean dinner will be served followed by Korean dancing, drumming, singing, storytelling, crafts and social time.

Admission at the door will be $15 for adults and $6 for kids ages 4-12. Seating is limited.

Ready for anything

Learn how to help yourself, your family and your community during any disaster by taking Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training offered by Fire District 1. Classes will meet twice a week beginning Oct. 5.

CERT classes teach citizens about readiness, basic disaster first aid, search and rescue operations, how to put out small fires and the psychological effect of disasters.

Starting on Oct. 5, classes will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. every Monday and Thursday at the Mariner Fire Station, 12310 Meridian Ave., Everett.

The class is free. Students will need to create (or purchase) a home disaster kit and purchase personal safety equipment to participate in some class activities. Preassembled kits will be available for purchase the first night of class.

To register, e-mail your name, address and daytime phone to kthorstenson@firedistrict1.org or call 425- 551-1250.
