Up &coming

The Nov. 22 meeting of the Edmonds City Council has been canceled due to Councilman Jeff Wilson’s absence during the holiday week, according to council president Richard Marin. Because it’s likely a crucial night for budget issues, Marin said he wants all members to be present.

On Nov. 29 the council will hear a presentation on development of the old Woodway High School play fields and work on the economic-development element of the comprehensive plan. Also planned is reconsideration of the contract rezone, master-plan approval and design review for the office/residence project proposed by the Hotel Group, and property owner Don Drew, for the south end of Sunset Avenue.

Night lights

Tune up your pipes for the holiday caroling season at the annual Edmonds Christmas ship sing-along from 7-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Edmonds Fishing Pier.

Organized by the Edmonds Parks and Recreation Department, the sing-along is held in conjunction with the Argosy Christmas Ship Festival, for which Edmonds is a departure site.

After hoisting anchor, the Christmas ship leaving Edmonds will hang around the marina long enough for the on-board choir to sing Christmas songs along with the dock-side audience. There will be apple cider, hot chocolate and cookies, courtesy of the parks department.

Flower power

Edmonds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 was a couple of McDonald’s fishwiches short of raising $3,000 from its “buddy poppy” drive held Veterans Day weekend.

The final tally was $2,998, reported Phil Sacks, chairman of the drive. Veterans and their spouses staked out space in front of the Westgate QFC, TOP Food &Drug and Shoreline’s Central Market trading poppies of remembrance for donations.

Every cent collected will go to support state veterans homes and veterans in need of a helping hand, Sacks said.

A tip of the hat to vets

In an ironic tableau, a rain-soaked Old Navy ball cap lay abandoned next to the memorial to the war dead of Edmonds the days leading up to Veterans Day.

Old news

Christine Deiner-Karr and Rob Van Tassell are the newest members of the Edmonds Historic Preservation Commission.

Deiner-Karr, a senior planning consultant for Group Health Cooperative, has been involved in genealogy and historical research for the past 30 years. She will serve a three-year term.

Van Tassell, director of housing and community development for the Archdiocesan Housing Authority, has developed and operated historical properties throughout Western Washington. He will complete in June the unexpired term of Darrell Marmion then reappointed for a three-year term.

The mayor appoints and city council confirms commission members.
