This vegetable garden has been there all along

I wrote a story about St. Thomas More Catholic Church and School’s new vegetable garden but neglected to include the fact that Lynnwood’s Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 6915 196th St. S.W., has had a P-patch for 15 years. Its founder, Lenni Evans, manages the garden.

She says the church was fortunate with the soil because before it was a church, it was farm land.

Like St. Thomas More, Good Shepherd received lots of community support in 1993 and now has 35 plots, all of them rented. About one-third of the plots are used by senior citizens.

“We just like to have this offered to the community,” Evans says.

Parents of newborns group starting soon

Family Support Center of South Snohomish County has a new class for parents of newborns. It’s called PEPS (Programs for Early Parent Support). The groups consist of several families and their 2-week to 4-month-old infants, who meet weekly, at a central site or in each other’s homes.

At each weekly meeting, these new parents share parenting challenges and experiences and offer each other support. A trained volunteer facilitates discussion about parenting issues such as sleep, nutrition, couples relationships and early learning.

The setting is supportive, confidential and based on the premise that every parent brings strengths to the table.

Parents gain new skills and build a network of peer support. PEPS groups meet for two hours each week over a 12-week period in either day or evening sessions. For more information, call 425-744-1199.
