‘Boomer Schools’ subject of exhibit

A new exhibit, “Alderwood Manor and the Baby Boomer Schools” opened April 19 at the Alderwood Manor Heritage Cottage in Lynnwood’s Heritage Park.

The new exhibit builds on the popular exhibit, “The Halls of Alderwood Grade School,” which illustrated the history of the Alderwood Elementary School where children attended classes between 1921 and 1962. Historic photos of the building, which also served as the Administrative Center for School District 15, are still on display.

Photos of Martha Lake, Spruce, Cypress, Cedar Valley, Oak Heights, Brier, Hazelwood, and Hilltop Elementary Schools, and a new Alderwood Elementary School, which opened between 1953 and 1968, are featured.

Also included is the first junior high school in Southwest Snohomish County: Lynnwood Jr. High School, built in 1953.

Heritage Cottage, located at 19903 Poplar Way, in Lynnwood’s Heritage Park is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. Call 425-775-4694 or go online to www.alderwood.org for more details.

Hearing examiner considered for MLT

Changing to a hearing examiner system for “court-like” land use decisions is the topic of an ordinance to be considered by the Planning Commission at a public hearing May 27, at Mountlake Terrace Council Chambers at City Hall 23204 58th Ave. W.

The change is intended to streamline the permitting process and provide more predictability.

Many cities use a hearing examiner rather than a board of adjustment for conditional use permits and other land use decisions.

If the system is adopted, the city would contract with a qualified professional to facilitate the necessary land use decisions.

At the hearing, the commission will consider public testimony on the proposed ordinance before adopting a recommendation.

A final decision will be made by the City Council after its own public hearing on June 2.
