Crime seminar offered for rental managers

Increase your knowledge, skills and effectiveness as a landlord by attending the Crime-Free Multi-Housing Seminar from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Spartan Gym.

This annual program for Shoreline rental managers and property owners will include topics such as CTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), tenant screening and background checks, evictions procedures, what to do if there are drugs in your rental, Section B Housing and domestic violence awareness.

Volunteers needed to prepare taxes

United Way of Snohomish County is seeking volunteers to help prepare income taxes for working and low-income families at a free tax preparation and e-filing site during the upcoming tax season.

Volunteers should have some experience preparing their own taxes and be comfortable using a computer. Volunteers are asked to commit to one 4-5 hour shift per week during the tax season, mid-January to mid-April. Volunteers will be trained and certified by the IRS on tax preparation and software. Knowledge of tax law is helpful, but not necessary. Volunteers who speak a foreign language are especially needed.

Volunteers can also help in other ways, such as greeting and screening clients.

Help end hunger in Western Washington

Help feed hungry people in our community by becoming a Product Recovery Specialist at Food Lifeline.

On a mission to end hunger in Western Washington, the nonprofit announced a new volunteer program that provides wholesome, nutritious food to those who need it, and supports community partnerships with retail grocery stores.

Volunteers will handle perishable food donations from local grocers, sorting products for quality and safety, and rescuing thousands of pounds of food each week from landfills for distribution to emergency shelters, meal programs and food banks in the Puget Sound area.

Qualified volunteers should be able to commit to a three-hour shift one afternoon a week, read food labels in English and follow written culling guidelines, lift a maximum of 15-20 pounds and work cooperatively in small groups.

Holiday Crafts coming to town

The third annual Holiday Crafts Market is coming to town on Nov. 17 and The Spartan Recreation Center (SRC) gymnasium will be transformed into a winter wonderland of gifts.

Over 50 juried artisans will sell their handmade crafts and wares. So grab your shopping bag and wallet and start your holiday shopping. Everyone is welcome. Food bank donations will be taken at the door.

The SRC is located on the southeast corner of the Shoreline Center Campus.

Health and Safety at Third Place Commons

Flu shots, quick massages and reduced- price bike helmets will all be part of the Health and Safety Fair on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Third Place Commons.

Information on emergency prep, poison prevention, and more will also be available at the Fair, sponsored by the Northshore Fire Department.

Who said you’d have to wait until spring to see your favorite farmers again? The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market comes indoors to Third Place Commons Nov. 18.

Shop the Market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and find local produce for Thanksgiving dinner. And be sure to mark your calendars because the Market’s back on Dec. 16.

Get the ‘Ivy Out’ at South Woods

Join the South Woods Preservation Group Nov. 17 as they remove invasive plants such as ivy and holly from South Woods in Shoreline.

The group will meet beginning at 9 a.m. in the Shorecrest High School south parking lot on 25th Avenue NE. at NE. 153rd and work until 3 p.m.

Bring tools, wear gloves and protective clothing. Minors under 14 must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Snacks, water and hot beverages will be provided.
