Weather or not
The new Port of Edmonds Weather Center that’s set to be dedicated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 2, is the only public amenity of its kind in the nation and possibly the world, according to Port spokesman James Blossey.
The covered, multi-paneled, electronic kiosk allows users to see real-time local weather conditions, forecasts and weather- related educational and interpretive features. Relief panels explaining important weather phenomena is courtesy of the students at the Edmonds Homeschool Resource Center.
The Weather Center is handicapped accessible and can be operated without assistance by people of all ages. It is located in the mid-marina area of the Port of Edmonds, on the water side of Anthony’s Homeport restaurant. It may be operated around the clock at no charge.
Slingin’ the blues
It’s a tough job, but someone has to assume the task of concocting the signature cocktail for guests at the Edmonds Arts Festival preview party thrown annually by the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation. The task has fallen to Jeremy Edwards, a member of the festival board and volunteer with the festival foundation. By day, Edwards is a real-estate agent with HKW Windermere Real Estate in Lynnwood. But come arts festival time, Edwards turns into a dabbler in the fine art of designing a “festini” (Festival. Martini. Get it?) that reflects the arts festival’s theme and color scheme.
This year the theme is artist Vincent van Gogh’s masterpiece, “Starry Night”. Edwards pays homage to its azure sky studded with yellow stars with a libation of curacao (blue in color but sour orange in taste), coconut rum (a festini staple), vodka, pineapple juice and lemonade finished with a lemon twist.
Edwards, who served taste-testers the drink in Chicken Little-adorned Dixie cups, promises imbibers the 2006 festini won’t turn tongues blue. But at $4 a pop, he hopes it’ll generate some green for foundation coffers.
