ATM boys nab fifth at state meet

The Archbishop Thomas Murphy boys track team came home with a slew of medals from last week’s Class 1A state track and field championship at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

The Wildcats were fifth overall in the team competition, which was won by Tacoma Baptist.

Archbishop Murphy’s 1,600 relay team took second place (3:29.39) finishing behind Tacoma Baptist.

Andy Hewitt took third (1:59.71) in the 800-meter race, while Steve Alkire placed third (41.63) in the 300 hurdles. Alkire also took fifth (16.58) in the 110 hurdles.

Doug VanderWel finished fifth (138-2) in the discus and seventh (45-8) in the shot put. Teammate Tony Slater was sixth (46-61/2) in the shot put.

Ashley Werner finished fourth (9-6) in the girls pole vault.
