The numbers are looking extremely good for Archbishop Thomas Murphy’s boys track team.

Not only do the Wildcats have a turnout of 52 individuals but they bring back some state participants.

“We have a lot of depth and a lot of returners,” said Archbishop Murphy coach Don McClure. “It’s a very strong team.

The top individuals include junior Peter Sadowski, who placed seventh in the 110-meter high hurdles and senior Steve Alkire, who finished seventh in the 300 hurdles at state.

Senior Doug VanderWel also has been to state throughout the years and should again be one of the league’s top throwers. Junior Kyle Wilkins has developed into a solid sprinter.

The Wildcats’ 1,600 relay team boasts a solid lineup of Alkire, Alex and Grant Ferris and Andy Hewitt.

The girls team’s numbers also are up this season but the bulk of the 25-member squad are first-year participants.

“I lost an awful lot,” McClure said. “Out of the top nine scorers, seven of them are gone. We have 19 freshmen. We’re learning.”

The Wildcats return Class 1A state triple jump champion Brenna Rice and sophomore distance runner Kari Sandoval. Junior Amanda Clancy is a strong 400 runner and also is a member of the 400 relay team.
