Archbishop Thomas Murphy’s speed and strength powered the boys team to a third-place finish at last week’s Class 1A Tri-district meet.
Senior Doug VanderWel won the discus (137-7), took second in the javelin (168-6) and finished third in the shot put (45-23/4).
Teammate Steve Alkire took first in the 300 hurdles (40.92) and placed second in the 110 hurdles (16.17).
Joining Alkire and VanderWel at this weekend’s state meet are Grant Ferris (fifth in the 400, 53.48); Andrew Hewitt (third in the 800, 1:59.23); Peter Sadowski (third in the triple jump, 42-11/2); and Tony Slater fourth in the shot put, (43-93/4).
In the girls competition, Archbishop Murphy’s Ashley Werner was second in the pole vault (8-6) and defending state triple jump champion Brenna Rice finished fifth (33-8).
King’s swept both the boys and girls titles.
