Bad day turns Sunny

Boasting “Best Teriyaki in Town” on the front of its menu, Sunny Teriyaki in Bothell is a teriyaki lovers dream.

I did not plan on going to the restaurant but only after a frustrated and roundabout vehicular nightmare on the Bothell-Everett Highway on my way to another restaurant, I pulled into the parking lot after noticing its bright sign. It was a hot day outside and the cool interior was a welcome break from my stuffy car.

I stepped to the counter and was greeted by the friendly cashier. I quickly scanned the menu’s 28 items, but a dry erase board advertising the “Sunny Teriyaki Special,” chicken teriyaki and an egg roll, caught my eye. Upon ordering, my cashier congratulated my choice and told me how good the dish was.

I sat down with my drink and took in my surroundings. The interior itself was very simple and very clean. As I waited for my food, I could not help but notice the steady stream of patrons. The door never seemed to stop moving and everyone ordered the Sunny Teriyaki Special.

Almost right away, the cashier brought me my food. Now, most teriyaki restaurants I have eaten at give you a small bowl when ordering a lunch special. Not the case with Sunny Teriyaki. I gaped at the huge plate, comparable to a full-sized dinner entree, set down before me.

Fresh salad, without dressing, and an enormous serving of rice filled the entire plate. On top of the rice was what seemed to be three large chicken breasts cut into strips and marinated in teriyaki sauce. My cashier reached over the table and pulled out salad dressing and teriyaki sauce and suggested I use them both on their respective portions. I had forgotten to grab a fork and when I stood up to get one, she ushered me back to my seat and got one for me.

The food was excellent. The salad was crisp and cool, while the chicken was tender and marinated to perfection. Again, I have to emphasize, I have never seen such a large helping of chicken on a dish billed as a special in my entire life, it was well worth the $5.95. I could have easily taken home leftovers but the food was so good I could not help but finish it all.

The quality of the food is rivaled only by the quality of the service. The cashier/server was more than accommodating, and not just to me, but to everyone in the restaurant. She moved about the restaurant non-stop, offering sauces and even bringing out a chair for woman to put her purse down so it was not on the table.

Make sure you have a large appetite because Sunny Teriyaki will be sure to fill you up.
