Earl Schuster’s resignation was wise. (“Senior center board member resigns over turmoil,” Enterprise, May 2) But Mr. Fleming isn’t the issue. He was simply the spark that began illumination of the continuing gross mismanagement of the South County Senior Center.
The real issue is simply: Should a membership, nonprofit senior center organization supported by public taxes and charities be accountable to its members through the normal process of routine elections or should it be run under the autocratic control of a small self-perpetuating private unaccountable club?
This small clique consisting of a majority of the Board of Directors totally and absolutely refuse to cooperate with the newly elected officers. They act in every way to obstruct these duly elected individuals. They are just awful sore-headed losers. Good faith and the principles of Americanism that we all expect seem to be unknown to them. One would more likely find this type of operation in an undeveloped or centrally controlled government such as China, Cuba or Zimbabwe, but certainly not here in our good old USA.
The recent officers election showed clearly that about 80 percent of members are absolutely disgusted with the board’s childish and petty attempts to keep their power after losing their election. And citizens at each and every membership and board meeting confirm this firmly and unanimously repeatedly.
The clique will tell you they were “elected” and by that they mean by each other and often in non-compliance with the corporate bylaws.
Well, seniors in Edmonds are not tiring, nor quitting. We will continue to work and wait for elected officials to grasp and understand the very real harm this out of control group of tyrants is doing to our senior center. We expect our City Council and our County Council to soon end the free ride of these autocrats.
