Bond passage shows things can be done right

All those who bemoan the supposed trend toward voter ignorance and apathy are hereby sentenced to go sit in one of Shoreline’s soon-to-be new or renovated parks and rethink their position.

The 70-percent approval given to the May 16 parks bond stands as evidence to politicians everywhere that if you craft it well, they will vote, “yes.” The $18.5 million open space, parks and trails bond did all the right things:

• It preserved unofficial and defacto park jewels, such as the South Woods and Kruckeberg Gardens, that the community had come to feel it deserved.

• It honed and polished key properties in the system, parks and trails that residents use and know need improvements.

• It had a little something for everyone, spreading the wealth from east to west, north to south.

• The support was grassroots and crossed what have sadly become contentious political boundaries.

Congratulations, Shoreline voters, you did good.

Now, Shoreline officials, keep your eyes on the prize and deliver the projects on time and under budget; everybody will benefit.
