Last Saturday’s Friends of the Library spring book sale brought in more than $1,000 for the Mill Creek Library, exceeding the goal the organization had set for the event.

“We did real well with the sale,” Friends of the Library member Selma Bonham said. “The weather was cooperative, and we had a lot of volunteers. For the spring sale, (what we raised) was a great amount.”

The money will go toward supplies for the facility and programs Friends of the Library puts on, such as summer reading programs.

The library uses some of the funds from the book sale to purchase supplies it cannot get in its annual budget from the Sno-Isle Regional Library System. In the past, such funds went to purchase new shelving, Bonham said.

“We’ll be able to do a lot for the library with this.”

The sale included books and magazines in a variety of genres, both fiction and nonfiction, and for readers of all ages.

Approximately 1,500 items were sold, which was more than half of the available stock, Bonham said. Leftovers were donated to other library friends organizations and The Salvation Army.

“None of (the books) are ever thrown out,” Bonham said.

Numerous volunteers worked the five-hour event May 10. Members of Friends of the Library who helped with the sale were Joyce Ramback, Mieke Gouwerok-van Coetsen, Judith Brownell, Lita Kaplan, Phil Mansell, RoseMary Maxwell, Phyllis Lewis, Jean Lightburne and Roy DeSoto.

Members of the Leo Club and library staff also participated. In addition, cookies and coffee were donated by local businesses.

Last Saturday’s sale was one of two book sales the organization has each year. The other sale takes place in the fall, usually after the city-wide garage sale.
