A group of nine teenage Boy Scouts helped nab two suspected burglars in Edmonds last weekend.
The suspects, a 26-year-old man from Seattle and a 22-year-old man from Mill Creek, were arrested by the Edmonds police department.
The Boy Scouts, members of the Edmonds Police Explorers, were providing overnight security for the popular Taste of Edmonds festival, according to police spokesman Sgt. Don Anderson.
Around 2 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 10, two of the Explorers found two men inside the locked gates of the Taste. That alone was illegal.
However, the Explorers saw one of the suspects slip inside a vendor’s tent. The second suspect appeared to be on lookout, Anderson said.
When the Explorers approached, one of the suspects ran away, and police were alerted.
The second suspect did not attempt to flee, Anderson said.
Police located the first suspect a few blocks away and arrested him, Anderson said. Both suspects had been drinking, he said.
Neither suspect had any stolen property on him.
The Explorers were instrumental in the case, Anderson said.
“It was a group effort,” he said. “As soon as the two (Explorers) saw one of the suspects, everybody came running.”
The Explorers have provided nighttime security for the Taste of Edmonds recently. Their program is designed to introduce teens to law enforcement careers, and is supervised by the Edmonds Police Department.
The Taste lasted three-days and had 300 vendors this year.
