May I begin by saying how privileged I feel to have been your Senior Class President for this past year. When I moved to Lake Stevens in 9th grade I never imagined that I would be standing here in front of all of you, but here I am and I am proud to say that I am a member of the graduating class of LSHS of 2004. As we sit here just a few minutes away from being completely done with this school there is so much I wish I could say. So many people I would thank, say congratulations to, and hug.
Our life is often shorter than we think, decisions come quicker and choices are made. Everyone sitting here this evening made a choice. Over these past four years I was often reminded of a quote by Maya Angelou “To survive is necessary, but to thrive is elegant”. Whichever way you got here tonight, by surviving or thriving, you should be proud. This has been a hard and rigorous path. Tonight I would just like to offer you a few words of advice, but feel free to do with them as you wish.
Be strong and diligent: You have already proven yourself thus by making through high school, but don’t give up now.
Be conscientious: Nothing is ever gained by taking the easy road, (unless the road is easy to begin with, which roads sometimes are. In that case don’t go looking for trouble, only martyrs make things harder on themselves.)
Love your friends with all your heart: Because in the end, while blood may be thicker than water, your friends choose you and your family is stuck with you. Therefore, in your darkest days it will be your friends who stand unwavering at your side by choice.
Be patient if you don’t know where you are going: Life may surprise you and you will find what you have been searching for is right in front of you.
To know where you are going, you must first embrace your past: No matter how much you loved or hated high school, it has helped shape you and you will never be able to move forward unless you come to terms with today.
That is the only advice I can offer, whether you choose to listen is up to you. As every one here saw, while diplomas were being handed out, my fellow officers and I were handing out yellow roses to each graduate. While yellow is one of our school colors, that is not the reason we chose the color. Yellow roses are a symbol for friendship, and it was our hope that as you go on with wherever your life takes you that you will always remember your friends here at LSHS.
In closing I would like to say, thank you so much class of 2004, for allowing me to be your President, it has been a privilege and honor to walk beside you this year. And now, Graduates, if you will please rise, please join me in the turning of the tassels. Ladies and gentlemen, members of the school board, I now present you the newly graduated class of 2004.
