United Airlines gets its first 787 Dreamliner
SEATTLE — United Airlines accepted delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner on Sept. 22. The aircraft is the first of five new Dreamliners the airline expects to receive this year from its total order for 50 of the aircraft. United is the first North American carrier to take delivery of the 787.

When United’s first Dreamliner arrives in United’s Houston hub, it will begin a monthlong training and certification program including non-commercial flights to several of United’s domestic hubs. As the initial aircraft are inducted into the fleet, they will be based at United’s Houston hub and will enter into previously announced domestic service in November and international service in December. United plans to operate its inaugural 787 commercial flight at 7:25 a.m. Nov. 4 from Houston to Chicago.
United’s first Dreamliner is configured with 36 seats in BusinessFirst, 70 seats in economy plus and 113 seats in economy.

EVERETT — Workforce Development Council Snohomish County and HopeWorks Social Enterprises will present a brown-bag lunch forum entitled Social Enterprise, a Success Stories, featuring Ty Taylor, vice president of Northwest Centers, a nonprofit organization with 14 social enterprise businesses. Taylor has been a highly successful social enterprise developer for the past 15 years and oversees many of the current businesses operated by Northwest Centers. The Forum is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 3. Cost to attend is $10 per agency (up to five staff can attend per agency), or $25 for three workshops. MARYSVILLE — Everett Community College’s School of Cosmetology is showing off its makeover with tours of the remodeled salon and classrooms Oct. 15-19. The school, at 9315 State Ave., Suite G, Marysville, underwent an extensive remodel this summer. Changes include 64 new styling stations, a new shampoo area and a new manicure and pedicure area. The college will celebrate with a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. Oct. 15 and specials and tours throughout the week. EvCC’s School of Cosmetology offers a variety of salon services to the public, including haircuts and color, nail care and skin care. The remodel makes room for 20 more students to participate in the program, EvCC cosmetology instructor Tina Evans said.
MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Mountlake Terrace lodging tax funds of $22,500 are available to qualified applicants for projects and events that promote tourism in 2013. BOTHELL — Alder Biopharmaceuticals Inc. of Bothell announced that it has received a $3.5 million milestone payment from Bristol-Myers Squibb for the initiation of a Phase 2 clinical trial of ALD518/BMS-945429, an investigational antibody treatment for Crohn’s disease. The payment is part of the collaboration between Alder and Bristol-Myers Squibb that was formed in 2009. Alder granted Bristol-Myers Squibb worldwide rights to develop and commercialize the product.
EVERETT — The City of Everett is accepting artist submissions through Dec. 5 for the poster design that will be used to promote the 2013 Sorticulture garden art event in Everett. The artwork will be used in promotional materials including posters, postcards, billboards, bus sides, television spots, electronic media and websites. SEATTLE — Brown Bear Car Wash celebrated its 55th anniversary Aug. 23 with its annual free car wash day. The event provided 27,125 free Bear Essential car washes over 12 hours at 21 locations, bringing the total to 159,288 over the past seven years. The family-owned company operates 42 car wash facilities in Washington and a network of gas stations and convenience stores.
SEATTLE — The Washington State Housing Finance Commission has announced the financing of the Pilchuck Place and Woods Creek Apartments through the issuance of $1,713,769 in tax-exempt bonds. Housing Hope is the nonprofit owner and developer for the two projects. Woods Creek Apartments in Monroe will have Section 8 project-based vouchers provided by the Housing Authority of Snohomish County. The 10 units at Pilchuck Place in Snohomish will be converted to low-income housing intended to serve graduates of Housing Hope’s transitional housing program.
LAKE STEVENS — Interior design firm Distinctive Interior Designs of Lake Stevens has celebrated its 17th anniversary. The company has served Snohomish County since 1995. Kelly DuByne, lead designer and proprietor, specializes in residential design and has done a variety of projects. She is also a certified color consultant.
LYNNWOOD — Global retailer H&M, Hennes &Mauritz, is opening its fifth Pacific Northwest location at noon Oct. 4 at the Alderwood mall in Lynnwood. In celebration of opening day, H&M at Alderwood will offer the first 100 shoppers in line an H&M T-shirt and an Access to Fashion Pass valued between $10 and $300.
EVERETT — On Sept. 11, the Everett Port Commission endorsed the City of Everett’s staff alternative to keep the current marine industrial zoning for the recently closed Kimberly-Clark Co. paper mill site to restore industry and employment opportunities. The site is a 66-acre parcel located between Naval Station Everett and the Port of Everett.
BOTHELL — CMC Biologics, a leading contract manufacturing organization, and Innomedica, a life sciences business development company specialized in Japan market, have entered into an agreement to facilitate CMC Biologics’ customer base in the Japan market. The Japanese market is the world’s second largest health care system totaling $115 billion in biopharmaceutical sales and comprised of global biopharmaceutical leaders.

EVERETT — Bond ratings from Standard &Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Service show Snohomish County’s financial position improving along with the regional economy. Standard &Poor’s affirmed its stable AA rating while Moody’s upgraded the county’s bonding position based on signs of regional economic recovery and Snohomish County’s ability to manage within its means and maintain a steady fund balance.
OLYMPIA — The Department of Revenue is continuing its efforts to reunite residents with their lost property at www.claimyourcash.org. The agency’s online searchable database contains more than 3 million names and $817 million in unclaimed assets. Examples of unclaimed property include unclaimed paychecks, utility deposits, bank accounts, uncashed refunds, life insurance proceeds, stocks, bonds and contents from safe deposit boxes.
OLYMPIA — Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna has announced that he and 36 other attorneys general reached a record $181 million settlement with Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. Officials allege that Janssen improperly marketed the antipsychotic drugs Risperdal, Risperdal Consta, Risperdal M-Tab and Invega and engaged in unfair and deceptive practices when it promoted the antipsychotic drugs for unapproved or off-label uses.
OLYMPIA — Gov. Chris Gregoire has announced that Washington will again be the venue for the Aerospace &Defense Suppliers Summit at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, March 10-12, 2014. She also announced that she is disbanding the Washington Council on Aerospace and reassigning its duties to the Office of Aerospace, the Aerospace Workforce Pipeline Committee, the Joint Center for Aerospace Innovation and the Washington Aerospace Partnership.
WASHINGTON — Small-business owners and start-ups can now take advantage of a new tool from the U.S. Small Business Administration to help them compete and grow. The free tool, called SizeUp, helps businesses identify new customers and compare their performance against other businesses in their industry with data collected from hundreds of private and public sources. WASHINGTON — The U.S. Small Business Administration and AARP will team up Oct. 2 to host the first National Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Day. The event is targeted at entrepreneurs over the age of 50 to match them with successful business owners and community leaders for advice and assistance. WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service is seeking community volunteers to provide free tax help to qualified individuals during the tax filing season. No previous experience is required. The IRS provides free tax law training and the materials needed to prepare basic individual income tax returns. Being fluent in a language other than English is a plus. WASHINGTON — According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, new export data that shows the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area’s merchandise exports increased by $5.7 billion, growing from $35.4 billion to $41.1 billion. This strong export growth has helped the Seattle metropolitan area to rank sixth nationally among other metropolitan statistical areas.

ARLINGTON — Cascade Valley Hospital has been awarded an A rating Hospital Safety Score for Patient Safety by The Leapfrog Group. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D or F by Leapfrog. The hospital was also recognized as a Community Value Five-Star Hospital by Cleverly + Associates. To celebrate, Cascade Valley Hospital hosted a reception on Sept. 19 in the Hospital Cafe.
EVERETT — The Snohomish Health District recently presented its Healthy Workplace Award to Everett Community College at its Board of Trustees meeting. The award honors businesses, agencies and other organizations that have adopted 100 percent outdoor no-smoking grounds or tobacco-free grounds policies. Everett Community College no longer has any designated smoking areas.
EVERETT — Snohomish County Public Utility District reached an energy-saving milestone in August as total sales of compact fluorescent light bulbs offered through a PUD promotion topped 5 million. The utility launched the program in 2000 and manages a network of more than 50 local retailers to offer discounts on the energy-saving bulbs. Each bulb uses one-fourth the energy of a standard incandescent bulb and lasts 10 times as long.
EVERETT — Fluke Corp. has been named a winner in the Digital Campaign Supplier over $250 million category of tED Magazine 2012 Best of the Best Awards. The awards recognize the best marketing practices in the electrical industry. Fluke won for the Vibration: See the Unseen social media campaign for the Fluke 810 vibration tester.
OLYMPIA — The State Department of Ecology has presented Sound Transit its Environmental Excellence Award for the agency’s role in a unique estuary-restoration project near Marysville. The Qwuloolt project will restore about 380 acres of unused farmland into a salt marsh, re-establish salmon habitat and aid in the recovery of Puget Sound. The Environmental Excellence Award is the Department of Ecology’s highest award.

BOTHELL — Philips recently celebrated the production of its one-millionth HeartStart automated external defibrillator by donating the unit to Everett Mountain Rescue Unit of Snohomish County. Philips donated 17 more units to the other organizations that are part of the Washington Mountain Rescue Association, including Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue. Philips HeartStart AEDs are designed and manufactured at the AED businesses global headquarters in Bothell.
