The new face of job seekers
Ever wished you could present a different face for job recruiters? Consider your wish granted. In May, TMP Worldwide Advertising &Communications held Network in World, a job fair within the popular Second Life virtual world.
During the event, job seekers and recruiters engaged in all the activities of a real-life job fair, according to TMP Worldwide, but with participants communicating via personalized avatars on “TMP Island.” For those unfamiliar with virtual-world lingo, an avatar is one’s self-created, digital alter ego.
Just imagine the possibilities. I’m guessing there were a lot of 30-something, digital hard bodies walking around with great hair and fashionable attire — and no sweaty palms.
Generation confusion
According to new data from Visa USA, an overwhelming majority of both baby boomers (79 percent) and echo boomers (74 percent) believe that our society will one day operate without cash and checks and will conduct all payment transactions electronically.
That’s all fine and dandy, but the real news here is that there is such a thing as an “echo boomer” — a term that garnered no recognition in a very unscientific survey of colleagues.
After little research, it has been determined that “echo boomers” are the folks born after Generation “X” who also are known as Millenials and Gen-“Y”ers. Hope that clears things up.
Say ‘cheese’
In September, Reuters news service reported that Japanese company Omron Corp. had developed “smile checker” software that can “tell whether someone looks happy, sad or somewhere in between” and can spot a smile in less than a second.
According to Reuters, the company sees a future for its technology in digital cameras, so a photo can be taken when everyone is smiling.
I’m still waiting for technology that can tell me when everybody’s eyes are open.
