Two Shoreline police officers suffered minor injuries in a multiple car accident at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, March 14. The two Shoreline police officers were injured while assisting a King County police officer, according to police officials.
King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart said a King County officer stopped a car for a suspected DUI on Interstate 5, at 236th Street SW in Mountlake Terrace. When the officer called in reinforcement, two officers from Shoreline arrived to assist the King County officer.
The three police cars were parked on the side of Interstate 5, along with the car of the driver who had been stopped, when an uninvolved woman rear-ended a Shoreline police vehicle, causing a chain reaction and damage to cars parked in front of it.
The first Shoreline officer, who was standing outside his car, saw the driver heading towards him and jumped over a guard rail. He fell down a 30-foot embankment and suffered a knee injury in addition to scrapes and bruises. The second Shoreline officer was still in his car at the time of the incident and sustained back and neck injuries.
Both officers were treated at the hospital and released, but will be out for at least a week.
According to Shoreline Police Chief Denise Turner, the Washington State Patrol is investigating the case and will likely charge the driver of the vehicle that hit the police vehicle with driving under the influence.
Both Shoreline vehicles were badly damaged, Turner said. One car is totaled and the second is reparable. For the time being, officers are borrowing cars from other stations.
