A car that caught fire inside a garage caused damage estimated at $43,000 to a home near Martha Lake on Monday, June 7.

The homeowner reported the fire at 4:04 p.m. in the 400 block of 143rd Place SW. He told firefighters he was working on his car in the garage when fuel from the gas tank ignited and flames spread to the structure.

The front of the two-car attached garage was in flames when firefighters arrived minutes later from the Martha Lake Fire Station, said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

The homeowner and his daughter, who was inside the house at the time of the fire, escaped without serious injuries. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and kept flames contained to the garage, Hynes said.

The fire temporarily displaced the family of five that lived in the house. A car, a motorcycle, furniture and other belongings being stored in the garage are a total loss. The family has insurance and a place to stay.
