The Shorewood football team suffered through another lost first half against Cascade.
The Bruins took a 41-0 lead against the Thunderbirds and went on to win 41-14 Oct. 6 at Everett Memorial Stadium.
“(The) first quarter we broke down defensively,” Shorewood coach Paul Christianson said. “They were on the board with 21 points before we got under control.”
Cascade’s Lorne Bridgford rushed for three touchdowns in the first half and piled up 185 yards on the ground for the game.
Offensively, the Thunderbirds (1-4 Western Conference South Division, 1-5 overall) didn’t fare much better against Cascade.
Christianson called the Bruins defensive line, the “biggest, strongest group we’ve gone up against on the line of scrimmage.”
Shorewood managed to score twice in the second half when quarterback Jordan Kellington hooked up with receiver Devin Whittle on a 4-yard pass in the third quarter and a 9-yard pass in the fourth.
“Eventually we got better but you can’t spot people that many points,” Christianson said.
Both teams put their substitutes in for most of the fourth quarter, Christianson said.
“They keep working at it regardless of the score,” Christianson said of his players. “We’re getting a lot of young guys a lot of experience.”
Shorewood senior Kelley Neubauer rushed for 59 yards on 15 carries to lead the T-birds.
Shorewood faces Edmonds-Woodway at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday, Oct. 13) in its homecoming game at Shoreline Stadium. The Warriors have a balanced offensive attack led by brothers Josh and Tony Heard at running back, Kyle McCartney at quarterback, Casey Hamlett at tight end, and Eric Greenwood and Antoine Wafer at wide receiver.
“The good news is we run similar offenses and defenses. Preparation is not as complex,” Christianson said. “Physically they’re really good, (but) not real fancy or tricky.”
