Getting underway today for three days of community-wide events is the 11th annual Celebrate Shoreline festival.

Kicking off the festivities today from noon to 5 p.m. is the Teen Event Skate Competition at the Connie King Skate Park at Paramount School Park, located at 15300 8th Ave. NE in Shoreline. The free event features a skateboard competition for ages 12 to 19 with prizes, food and giveaways will be available throughout the day.

The schedule is full for Saturday, Aug. 19, beginning bright and early with the USAT&F certified Shoreline Rotary Run at Shoreline Stadium, located behind Shoreline Conference Center at 18560 1st Avenue NE. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and is $25 for adults, $15 for children under 12. The 5K walk/run and 10K run start promptly at 9 a.m. Cash prizes will be awarded for teams and individual overall winners, plus trophies and ribbons for individual gender/age categories. All participants receive free t-shirts, “goody” bags, food and beverages. For more information visit www.shorelinerotaryrun.org.

On the Ridgecrest Elementary School grounds, located at 16516 10th Ave. NE in Shoreline, the Ridgecrest PTA’s Arts and Crafts Market opens at 9 a.m. Funds raised from sales will benefit the Ridgecrest PTA’s playground project. At 10 a.m. the Cruise-in Car Show, hosted by the Shoreline Historical Museum and the City of Shoreline, displays vintage and modern vehicles also on the Ridgecrest campus. Registration for participating cars is $15; judges will present awards in several categories.

The focal point of the festivities is the Celebrate Shoreline Parade with the theme, “On the Road to New Horizons.” The parade starts at 11 a.m. and follows a route south on 15th Avenue NE from NE 180th Street to NE 165th Street in North City. Shoreline resident and Olympic bronze medalist Kelly Stephens is the 2006 parade grand marshal.

The parade disperses at noon at the Ridgecrest Elementary grounds, where the Celebrate Shoreline festival picks up with food, inflatables, games, crafts and community booths until 5 p.m.

It wouldn’t be Celebrate Shoreline without acknowledging the city’s beaches, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, the Sandcastle Building Contest does just that. The event takes place at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, located at 2021 NW 190th St. in Shoreline. Residents and visitors are invited to participate. Registration for the all-ages event, hosted by the Richmond Beach Community Council, is free, but participants should bring their own building tools.
