Cheers to all the service day volunteers

Three cheers for the volunteers who made “An Edmonds Kind of National Service Day” a great success! Between 40-50 residents of Edmonds and surrounding communities helped commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with community service, helping to remove invasive ivy from Edmonds City Park. Because of the awesome turnout, the work area that was originally targeted was expanded. And we still finished in less than three hours! In fact, volunteers continued to show up in the afternoon, long after the job had been completed. A special thanks goes out to Councilman Steve Bernheim, Brian McIntosh (director, Edmonds Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services), and Rich Lindsay (Edmonds Park Maintenance Manager) for helping to coordinate this effort. Likewise, kudos to the Edmonds Backyard Wildlife Habitat Project, Sustainable Edmonds, People for Puget Sound, Floretum Garden Club and the Alliance of Citizens for Edmonds for helping to recruit for and promote this event on short notice. The Edmonds City Park project was one of 13,000 nationwide service projects that were intended to kick-off ongoing commitments to our communities. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we showed what was possible when Americans work together to strengthen our communities. Now that MLK Day is over, we need to keep that same spirit of volunteerism alive throughout the year. It doesn’t matter how you choose to stay involved in our community, it just matters that you do!
