Chunky’s a tasty experience

Waiting for the bus is sure to become a more pleasant experience for those who use the Ash Way Park-and-Ride now that the Newberry Square residential and retail development has been completed.

One of the first businesses to move into the complex, located just off 164th Street SW and Ash Way in Lynnwood, is Chunky’s Pizza and Subs. With the adjacent apartment complex and busy Park-and-Ride lot, it’s a prime location for a take-out and delivery operation. On the night I stopped in, there was a consistent flow of customers, there as I was to shuttle an order home to a hungry crowd, or having a quick bite to eat while waiting to transfer bus routes.

Chunky’s specialty is — you guessed it — pizza and submarine sandwiches. Three specialty pizzas (the Chunky’s Special, Chunky’s Favorite and Garlic Chicken) range in price from $10.99 for a medium to $16.99 for an extra large; traditional combos range from $8.99 $13.99, and of course there’s the option of building your own combination of toppings. For solo diners there’s a personal pan pizza which starts at $2.99 for cheese only, up to $5.29 for specialty combos. Chunky’s pizza distinguished itself among my picky group for the chewy, flavorful crust and mild sauce.

Subs are offered hot or cold vary in price from $3.29 for a half on up to $6.59 for a full. Cold subs are served on white or wheat bread, and run the gamut of sandwich fillings: BLT, Italian Combo, various meats with or without cheese, tuna, vegetarian and the “Chunky’s Supreme,” featuring four cheeses, ham pastrami, pepperoni, turkey, salami and roast beef. Hot subs are served on french bread, and extend their selection to include French dip, Philly, Meatball, Chicken Fajita and standard meat options. Kid size sub meals are also on the menu and include a small drink with choice of two cookies or potato chips.

An aray of sides are available, from three sizes of the soup of the day to cheese or garlic bread, buffalo wings and cheese fries. Salads are also part of the mix, with a choice of side or full servings of garden, tuna, grilled chicken, Greek and Caesar.

Chunky’s always has a daily special — I took advantage of the two medium pizzas (with two toppings each), cheese bread and a two liter soda for $21.99 deal. We would have eaten more of our pizza order had there been any room left in our stomachs — which fortunately meant there would be leftovers for lunch the next day.
