Mountlake Terrace
The Mountlake Terrace City Council race between incumbent John Zambrano and challenger William Knorr is a closer call than voters might think. Zambrano has worked hard to make himself a knowledgeable and effective council member. However, some of his council mates have been better at staying above disruptive behavior that has plagued the council for years.
Knorr has been involved at the grassroots level and understands residents’ concerns. Not to mention, anyone who has adopted three children and been a foster parent to hundreds more probably knows something about how to get along. However, Knorr’s main issue, better communication, is perhaps too narrow for the variety of problems that come before the council.
In this case, voters could give Zambrano the nod.
Lynnwood
This year’s City Council election in Lynnwood features a political rematch between incumbent Ted Hikel and challenger Patrick Decker. Hikel won the 2003 version and this year, voters should again award him first place.
Hikel supports Mayor Don Gough’s proposal to add more firefighters and police officers using revenue from the red-light cameras.
With major economic development projects coming in the next few years, Hikel has the needed experience to help guide both, having served on the council during the development of Alderwood mall.
It’s not that Decker, a planning commission member chairman, doesn’t have strengths. He is a strong opponent of recent Lynnwood tax increases and believes in taking a proactive approach towards possible annexations to the city and in building a stronger partnership with Snohomish County.
However, Hikel is the better choice in this race.
