Check fees

before renewing

The Department of Licensing is urging light truck owners across the state with tabs expiring in February or March to double check the fees they owe prior to mailing a payment to their county auditor.

On Feb. 24, DOL changed gross weight fees for light trucks back to what they were prior to Initiative 776 passing last November. This was don to comply with an order issued by King County Superior Court Judge Mary Yu finding Initiative 776 unconstitutional and directing DOL to immediately stop any action to “implement or enforce” the initiative.

Renewal notices sent to light trucks owners statewide with registrations that expire in February or March were mailed prior to the court decision and will show an inaccurate fee total. This affects light trucks falling into the 4,000, 6,000 and 8,000 pound gross weight categories.

Prior to the initiative, the gross weight fee for trucks in the 4,000 pounds or less category was $37, the fee for trucks in the 4,001 to 6,000 pound category was $44 and the fee for trucks in the 6,001 to 8,000 pound category was $55. The initiative lowered all these fees to $30. The court ruling returns them to their previous levels.

Renewal notices for light trucks with registrations that expire in April include correct fees. This change only affects the owners of light trucks. It does not affect passenger vehicles, even large ones like sport utility vehicles.

Truck owners who plan to register by mail should contact their county auditor’s office or a local vehicle licensing office to determine the proper fee prior to mailing their payment. Renewing in person or using DOL’s Internet Tabs online vehicle renewal system (www.internettabs.wa.gov also will assure truck owners that they are paying the proper fee and eliminate any delay in receiving tabs for their vehicles.

County auditors who receive renewals by mail with the wrong fee enclosed will return the checks to truck owners with a notice detailing the proper fee.
