Rainbows kidnap
to raise funds
Rainbows for Girls of Washington and Idaho will have their largest fund-raising program over the next few months. Their goal is to raise funds for the production of and distribution of information pertaining to the National Children’s Cancer Society.
The Rainbows will be “kidnapping” well-known community members, setting them free after ransom or donations are raised.
The Rainbow organization is made up of girls between the ages of 12 and 20 who have a desire to serve the community in which they reside. Religion, race, social stature, or disability are not considered.

Liquor Control enforcement agents conducted 20 tobacco compliance checks on Jan. 17, in King and Snohomish County. During the compliance checks a 15- or 16-year-old entered either a restaurant or a grocery store to attempt to buy cigarettes. Of the 20 compliance checks, one business in Kirkland was cited. Eight of the other 19 checks were made in Mountlake Terrace and all complied. The were as follows:

Clerks who sell tobacco to a minor receive a $50 fine for the first time offense. Licensees receive a penalty based on the following guidelines:
First offense $100 fine, second offense $300 fine, third offense $1,000 fine with a six-month license suspension and fourth offense is a $1,500 fine with a 12-month license suspension.

gets award
The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the city of Lynnwood by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United Sates and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management, according to press release. Also, an award of Financial Reporting Achievement was awarded to Mike Bailey, Lynnwood’s finance director by the government as primarily responsible for preparing the award winning CAFR.
The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR, according to a press release.

Heed burn bans in your area
Washington state law prohibits residential burning and land clearing fires in urbanized areas, according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. If you’re thinking of burning outdoors, know that, violations of outdoor burning regulations can be costly. Fines can exceed $13,000 per day and typically start at $2,000 plus reimbursement costs for fire department responses. Contact your local fire department before you burn. Yard sale, cleanup coming soon to MLT
Put this on your calendars: The annual Mountlake city wide yard sale is the weekend of May 2, 3 and 4.
Then, the city’s annual spring cleanup, on May 7 will allow residents unlimited quantities of garbage picked up free of charge, according to a Mountlake Terrace press release.
The event also offers a free-drop off time on May 10.

Community Transit board elects officers
Recently, the Community Transit board of directors elected new officers.
Arlington Mayor Bob Kraski was unanimously elected to chair the board. Mukilteo City Councilwoman Cathy Reese was unanimously chosen as vice chair and Lake Stevens Mayor Lynn Walty was unanimously elected secretary of the board.
Kraski replaces outgoing board chair and Snohomish County Council Chairman Gary Nelson, who will continue to serve as a board member.
Kraski, who joined the agency’s board in 2000, was vice chair last year and secretary of the board in 2001. He also is chairman of the Washington State Transit Association Board. Kraski was first elected to the Arlington City Council in the early 1980s and became mayor in 1990.
Reese joined the Community Transit Board in 2001 and has played an active role ever since. She served as board secretary in 2002.
Walty joined Community Transit’s board in 2002 after serving as a board alternate representing small cities since 1998.
Snohomish County Councilman Dave Gossett was appointed to the Community Transit Board in January. Gossett was elected to the County Council in 2001. The former Mountlake Terrace mayor replaces Snohomish County Councilman Jeff Sax on the agency board.
Also serving on the nine-member board are Mountlake Terrace Mayor Pat Cordova, Marysville Mayor Dave Weiser, Edmonds City Councilman Dave Earling and Lynnwood City Councilwoman Lisa Utter.
Board alternates are Brier City Councilman Carlton Gipson, Lynnwood City Councilman Martin Nelson, Mill Creek City Councilman Jack Start, Bothell City Councilman Tim Olsen and Edmonds City Councilman Richard Marin.
Community Transit’s Board of Directors is comprised of elected officials selected by the governing bodies of the cities and county served by the agency. This includes two members of the Snohomish County Council, two members from cities with populations of 30,000 or more, three members from medium-sized cities and two members from cities with populations less than 10,000.
The board meetings, which are open to the public are at 3 p.m. the first Thursday of each month in the Community Transit Administration Building, 7100 Hardeson Road, Everett.
Lynnwood seeks new parks’ member
The City of Lynnwood is seeking applicants for an opening on the Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Board.
This is a mayor-appointed position, which is confirmed by the City Council, and has a three-year term. The opening is for an unexpired term ending on May 31, 2004. Responsibilities include attending one monthly meeting, as well as other meetings and activities as appropriate. Applicants must live within Lynnwood’s city limits.
The Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Board is made up of seven volunteers who work to support parks and recreation in Lynnwood.

Donate an old cell phone for safety
Project Donate a Phone is back on and the need is high, say officials for The Snohomish County Center for Battered Women.
The center is in need of old or new cellular phones, even ones with missing parts can help, Center officials said. Usable cell phones will be provided free to all women who use the center’s services. In case of emergency old phones can still be used to dial 911. The ones that can’t be used will be recycled to a business who has agreed to pay the non-profit organization for parts. To donate phones, drop them off at the Mountlake Terrace Police Department at 5906 232nd St. SW or to the Snohomish County Center for Battered Women at 1310 Pacific Avenue in Everett #5 (corner of Grand and Pacific) or Mr. Bill’s restaurant at the Everett Mall. Free car seat checks in Lynnwood
Motor vehicle crashes are the single largest cause of child fatalities in the country, officials said.
However, proper child seat safety can reduce the risk of injury or death by 70 percent, officials added, if the car seat is installed correctly. Lynnwood Police have recently nationally certified five technicians to help parents and care givers be sure their precious cargo is as safe as possible.
Free car seat checks are now available every Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. by appointment, at the Lynnwood Police Station at 19321 44th Avenue West. Checks take about 30 to 45 minutes to complete and it is best to have the child there for the check. For more info. or to make an appointment call 425-744-6900.
MLT Crime Watch volunteers needed
Crime Watch is looking for new members. Retired citizens who would like to join the group can pick up an application at the Mountlake Terrace Police Department, 5906 232nd St. SW. Volunteers work an average of two hours a week and are provided with uniforms. This is a non-enforcement, non-confrontational patrol program, so no weapons are used. The volunteers in the Crime Watch program enjoy the camaraderie of the group and being able to give something back to the community, officials said.
