Homeless count

in Shoreline

Volunteers with the Seattle/King County Coalition for the Homeless counted a total of 1,899 homeless people in Seattle, Kent and Shoreline as a part of its annual street count in the early hours of Oct. 17.

In Shoreline, volunteers counted 24 homeless. Most of them were found sleeping in vehicles in the corridor between Aurora Avenue N. and I-5, said Rob Beem with the city of Shoreline.

LFP Heritage Tree program begins

The City of Lake forest Park has begun a Heritage Tree Program. Trees located in the city can be recognized for extraordinary traits such as their size, age or significance to a family. The Heritage Tree Committee will evaluate and designate Heritage trees. The tree will be included in the Heritage Tree Registrar at City Hall, honored on Arbor Day in April, and will be eligible to be included in the city’s tour guide of historic homes and trees.

Anyone can nominate a tree on public land or on their own property. Groups of trees on a property can be nominated with the property owner’s permission. For more information, call city hall at 206-368-5440.

Skate park honors former mayor

Shoreline City Council is considering naming the city’s new skate park at Paramount School Park after the city’s first mayor, Connie King.

King was a staunch advocate for the establishment of a Teen Program as well as other parks, recreation and cultural service programs and facilities. She was passionate about building a skate park and led the efforts to ensure the planning and construction of the park were completed.

Shoreline City Council is also considering naming a trail that extends from Meridian Avenue N. to Twin Ponds Park, “Trail of Cedars” because Cedar trees are the dominant species of trees in this corridor.

Shoreline receives budget awards

The City of Shoreline recently received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the city’s 2003 budget. The honor was awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S and Canada, to honor cities that exemplify best practices in municipal budget writing.

The city’s finance department also received an award for developing a new investment policy from the Association of Public Treasurers of the U.S. and Canada.
