Free safety event in Terrace
The city, New Beginnings Church and local businesses are joining together to promote safety in a fun environment with activities for all ages at the first annual Safety Net Fair.
The event will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Kildeer Field, 21705 58th Ave. W. located behind New Beginnings Church in Mountlake Terrace.
Free safety events will include car seat safety checks, free fire extinguisher recharge, free bicycle safety checks (noon to 2 p.m.), fire safety awareness, first aid class information, earthquake preparedness and the Support 7 mobile.
There will also be free refreshments, an ‘adrenaline rush’ obstacle course, bungee run adventure, fast pitch radar timings, a safe preschool play area, crafts and prizes.

The Lynnwood Civil Service Commission certified Sept. 3 an eligibility list for a Medical Services Administrator (MSA) to oversee the medics at the Lynnwood and Edmonds Fire Departments.
According to Robin Hall, Lynnwood’s human resource director, a hire for that position will be made there soon. Longtime paramedic Greg Macke has been the acting MSA for both the departments since the first of 2003.
At that meeting, the Commission also approved an external recruitment process for Lynnwood’s Assistant Fire Chief position. A hire for that position is still several weeks down the road, Hall said and internal candidates may also apply during this time, she added.
Jews for Jesus Lynnwood event
The Jews for Jesus present The Liberated Wailing Wall at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Roots Messianic Congregation meeting at Community Bible Fellowship, 5823 176th St. SW in Lynnwood. The community is invited to experience this wide range of talent.

Be part of the Trolley Days Band
The Trolley Days Band will begin their fall and winter rehearsals from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 at Edmonds Church of God, 8224 220th SW Edmonds.

Walk for MLT’s Chauncey Jones
At the young age of 20, Chauncey Jones, a 1998 graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, was diagnosed with Leukemia. Chauncey’s fight was brief and intense, lasting only four months.
To honor his life, his family and friends or “Chauncey’s Team” have joined together and organized a fund raising walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in his name.
“Light the Night Walk” has been organized from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Greenlake in Seattle. There will be food, prizes and other activities at this event.
Individuals or businesses can designate themselves as part of the “Team” and collect pledges. They can opt to walk and/or put up posters or donate food or raffle items.
A shuttle is available to all participants and leaves every 10 minutes from the 65th and Ravenna Park and Ride to shuttle participants to Greenlake. Walkers should meet and sign in at the Amphitheater at Greenlake at 6 p.m. The shuttle will transport people back and forth all evening long.
Sexual predator housing hearing
The Lynnwood City Council will conduct a public hearing on an ordinance that regulates the location of a facility which could house, treat and supervise violent predatory sex offenders in Lynnwood.

Writing contest calls for fiction
A literary contest is being sponsored by a local, award-winning author, Monica Coglas (lives in Mill Creek, office is in Mountlake Terrace) who has won several awards for her novels. Aspiring writers need to submit seven pages maximum of a fictional piece (no non-fiction), a cover page stating the genre for which the work is written and a $20 entry fee for each entry.
Contestants may not have been published within the last five years, and cannot be contest winners from previous years. Entries must be in manuscript form (typed, double-spaced, single-sided, 1-inch margins) and must be postmarked by Sept. 26, mailed to PO Box 331, Mountlake Terrace WA 98043-0331. Caregivers workshop
The South Snohomish County Family Support Center is offering a free six week course titled Taking Care of You: Powerful Tools for Caregiving to help family caregivers care for themselves while caring for another adult, older relative or friend.
The classes are beneficial whether caregivers are helping a parent, spouse, friend, someone who lives at home, in a nursing home, or in another part of the country. Groups meet 2.5 hours once a week for six weeks. This class will provide tools to: Reduce stress, communicate effectively with other family members, the doctor, the health team and paid help practice self-care, reduce guilt, anger and depression, make tough decisions, set goals and problem-solve.
Classes don’t discuss how to provide physical care for a family member but rather how the caregiver can thrive while managing their caregiving responsibilities. The Powerful Tools for Caregiving classes are research-based &proven to reduce caregiver guilt, anger and depression. Specially trained class facilitators co-lead the classes. Developing Capable Young People
A research based, parent education free series, consisting of seven two-hour sessions. DCYP teaches participants how to communicate more effectively, how to use techniques that increase achievement and motivation, and how to better develop a sense of responsibility in youth. This motivating series is beneficial for anyone who wishes to strengthen the capacity to be a positive influence on youth.
Especially helpful for parents, foster parents, grandparents and other relatives raising children, teachers and others whom work with children.

Free and safe fun for teens
The Neutral Zone, a non-profit organization which benefits at risk youth, continues its safe and supervised Friday and Saturday night programs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Scriber Lake High School, 20525 52nd Ave. W in Lynnwood. Donate an old cell phone for safety
Project Donate a Phone is back on and the need is high, say officials for The Snohomish County Center for Battered Women.
The center is in need of old or new cellular phones, even ones with missing parts can help, Center officials said. Usable cell phones will be provided free to all women who use the center’s services. In case of emergency old phones can still be used to dial 911. The ones that can’t be used will be recycled to a business who has agreed to pay the non-profit organization for parts. To donate phones, drop them off at the Mountlake Terrace Police Department at 5906 232nd St. SW or to the Snohomish County Center for Battered Women at 1310 Pacific Avenue in Everett #5 (corner of Grand and Pacific) or Mr. Bill’s restaurant at the Everett Mall. Free car seat checks in Lynnwood
Motor vehicle crashes are the single largest cause of child fatalities in the country, officials said.
However, proper child seat safety can reduce the risk of injury or death by 70 percent, officials added, if the car seat is installed correctly. Lynnwood Police have recently nationally certified five technicians to help parents and care givers be sure their precious cargo is as safe as possible.
Free car seat checks are now available every Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. by appointment, at the Lynnwood Police Station at 19321 44th Avenue West. Checks take about 30 to 45 minutes to complete and it is best to have the child there for the check. For more info. or to make an appointment call 425-744-6900.

All courts in Washington including Lynnwood Municipal and South Snohomish County District Court are on the site except for Seattle Municipal Court.
