LFP Burke Gilman open house set

The city of Lake Forest Park is holding a Burke Gilman Trail Open House from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 12 at the Lake Forest Park Town Centre Commons at the upper level of the shopping center. This is a meeting to discuss the potential upgrades in the segment of the trail that goes through Lake Forest Park.

city’s first mayor

Lake Forest Park will be celebrating the dedication of the Holman Plaza in front of the entrance to the new City Hall at 11 a.m. on May 17, and the community is invited. Francis Holman was the first mayor of Lake Forest Park.

Holman had a long and distinguished service in the military, private law practice, on the Shoreline School Board, as our first mayor and state representative, senator and judge.

Holman served as mayor from 1961 until he resigned to serve in the state legislature in 1967. In 1963, the area in front of the old City Hall was named Holman Plaza.

“I think it is important to preserve our history and traditions,” said Mayor Hutchinson. “I am very pleased to dedicate this new space in memory of our first mayor.”

calls for artists

Lake Forest Park is planning its annual Picnic in the Park on June 26 and is calling for crafters, photographers, and gardeners, and other vendors to set up booths. For more information and a registration form see the city website at www.cityoflfp.com.

Call for artists, crafters, writers

The Shoreline Arts Festival is looking for artists, writers and crafters for the 13th annual event on June 28 and 29 at the Shoreline Center. Juried sections include 2-D art, sculpture, artisan crafts photography, literature, and craft booths. The Festival provides two extraordinary days of music, dance, theatre, literary arts, visual arts, and food, plus the Shoreline Philippine Festival and Student Film Festival. Hopelink food drive in Shoreline

On Saturday, May 10 local letter carriers with the post office will join with others in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the U.S. for the eleventh annual National Association of Letter Carriers food drive. Donations collected in Shoreline will benefit Hopelink food banks.

Citizens are asked to place non-perishable food items next to their mailboxes and letter carriers will collect the donations along their mail routes. Hopelink food banks are especially in need of items like tuna and canned meat, peanut butter, soup, pasta and tomato sauce.

YMCA honors volunteers

Several volunteers at the Shoreline/South County YMCA were honored for their volunteer efforts at the YMCA of Greater Seattle’s 126th Annual Meeting, held at Benaroya Hall on April 29. These honorees represent the very best of 11,114 volunteers, including teens, families and older adults, who contributed more than 151,231 hours of service to the community in the past year.

The following individuals from the Shoreline/South County YMCA were named 2002 YMCA Volunteers of the Year: Joe Sanders was awarded youth volunteer of the year, Bob Bischel was awarded active older adult volunteer of the year, Toshiko Aramaki was awarded program volunteer of the year, and Steve Dunn was awarded financial development volunteer of the year, and Vern Chase was awarded policy volunteer of the year.
