Job fair for those with disabilities
Lynnwood WorkSource partners, including Edmonds Community College, worked together and obtained a $23,000 grant to help unemployed non-native English speakers and people with disabilities find jobs and to hold a job fair specifically for them.
“It is especially hard for people who speak English as their second language and for people with disabilities to get re-employed in this economy when they are laid off,” said Jan Strand, director of WorkFirst at Edmonds Community College. “The goal is to help people off of unemployment.”
The job fair will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 29 and a job fair preparation day is scheduled for 2 to 6 p.m., May 28, both at Lynnwood WorkSource at 20311 52nd Avenue W., Suite 300. About 200 people and 30 employers are expected to attend. Interpreters for Arabic, Vietnamese, Spanish, Russian and American Sign Language will be available to help job seekers get prepared, find out what to bring, prepare or update resumes and get tips on how to talk to employers and interview.
The grant from the Washington State Employment Security Department also enables WorkSource to purchase translated materials, pay for other activities to better help these job seekers and to evaluate the job fair. WorkSource plans to hire higher-level English as a Second Language students at Edmonds Community College to conduct follow up interviews with job fair participants.
